Cheerleaders from Roberson attended a Universal Cheerleading Association camp from July 30 to Aug. 1 at Appalachian State and hardly came home empty-handed.

Special thanks to the Rams for this information:

Both JV and Varsity squads from TC Roberson attended a UCA (Universal Cheerleading Association) cheer camp at App State from July 30th-August 1st. The camps are run by staff comprised of college cheerleaders and focus on teaching new game day material, educating cheerleaders on safety rules changes and stunt techniques, and provide an opportunity for competition against other squads. This was the first UCA camp for the majority of the athletes.

JV walked away with 1st place Extreme routine and 1st place in the Game Day Championships against other JV teams. Varsity took 1st place Extreme routine and 1st place in Game Day Championships against other varsity squads, and also Overall Camp Champs out of all teams present at the camp. Both JV and Varsity as a program also earned the coveted “Top Banana” on the first day of camp for having the most spirit.

In addition to team success, individual athletes were also recognized for various awards. Sophomore Jada Proctor-Bates and senior Abby Bischof were both recognized as Pin-It-Forward recipients which is an award chosen by staff members and given out to those who demonstrate strong leadership skills, positive attitudes throughout camp, and kindness to other squads. Seniors Shaina Wynne and Vittoria Duque were invited by UCA to try out to be staff members. Shaina Wynne was also crowned “Jump-Off Queen” of the entire camp for her jump skills and junior Reese White earned the title of “Dancing Diva” for her technique and skill in learning the hip-hop routine taught by the instructors. Three athletes were also selected as All-American cheerleaders through a separate tryout process and invited to London to cheer in the New Year’s Eve parade sponsored by Varsity. Those athletes include Morgan Fowler (sophomore), Carney Wenzl (sophomore), and Shaina Wynne (senior).

The success at this camp is a great indicator of the potential for the rest of the season. The goal in attending was to build skills necessary to be competitive and most importantly to learn techniques that will help increase school spirit and enhance the overall game day environment for our sports teams. Varsity coaches Cortney Erxleben and Bree Hodge and JV coach Jami Davis are absolutely thrilled with the performance of these teams and look forward to seeing what else they accomplish throughout the year.
