Reynolds graduate Rico Dowdle set a Western North Carolina record for single-season touchdown responsibility (63) last fall.

Rico Dowdle was hobbling around on crutches earlier this week at a University of South Carolina football practice, and now the Gamecocks have explained why.

The 2015 Citizen-Times All-WNC Player of the Year is expected to miss at least two to three weeks with a groin injury, it was revealed Thursday. Dowdle also had offseason surgery for a sports hernia.

Dowdle is a true freshman vying for playing time at running back.

Dowdle set a Western North Carolina record for single-season touchdown responsibility (63) as a high school senior and was dubbed a back-to-back Mountain Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year and Parade All-American. Dowdle carried the ball 247 times for a WNC-best 2,545 yards and 51 touchdowns. He passed for 1,434 yards and 11 touchdowns with four interceptions and had a 55-yard touchdown reception. Dowdle scored two touchdowns in the Shrine Bowl.

South Carolina’s season opener is Sept. 1 at Vanderbilt.
