Former Asheville High baseball player Jared Patterson has won an American Legion scholarship valued at $1,000.

Patterson is an incoming freshman at Methodist. Academic and athletic considerations were given to the Legion scholarship which covers the entire Area IV classification that Asheville Post 70 belongs to.

Patterson garnered All-Mountain Athletic Conference and Citizen-Times All-WNC honors after batting a team-high .471 with 26 RBIs, eight doubles and four home runs for the Cougars (10-13) last spring. He was walked 13 times.

The Asheville scholar graduate had a weighted grade-point average of 4.13. Patterson has also received a Methodist University Presidential Academic Scholarship which is good for four years.

Patterson was one of the top power hitters for Post 70 this summer. He batted .426 with 27 RBIs, three home runs and 14 walks. Patterson did not commit a single fielding error at either catcher or third base.

As for Post 70? The Area IV Western Division championship team set a regular-season record for wins (14) and finished with a 15-5 record.
