BURNSVILLE – Mountain Heritage senior Alex Boone might have committed to play for Charlotte next year, but she is still focused on her last volleyball season with the Cougars.
“I’ve been keeping up with their social media, it makes me excited to be a 49er. I cannot wait,” she said.
Before she steps on the court in the Queen City, there is at least one more thing she wants to accomplish before she ends her high school career.
Boone said the team’s goal is to win its conference, something that hasn’t been done since 2010 when her sister, Taylor, played for Mountain Heritage. The elder Boone went on to play for Tusculum College, an NCAA Division II school in Greeneville, Tenn.
She also served as a positive example to her younger sister.
“If it wasn’t for her, I don’t think I would be the player I was today,” Boone said. “She’s always encouraging me. She has the biggest work ethic.”
While she played in college, Boone said it was seeing her older sister deal with ankle surgery and an elbow injury that inspired her.
“Her attitude through that has been an inspiration for me,” Boone said.
After finishing last year 13-8, the Cougars made it to the first round of the 2A playoffs and lost to Hendersonville. The Cougars opened their season with a sweep of Patton Tuesday night.
“We were getting really, really anxious to play,” Boone said. “I know we were all really, really, excited.”
Boone played club ball for Xcel Volleyball Performance in Hendersonville and after a three week break, went to camp with Mountain Heritage.
“It was really nice to have some time off, but I was excited to get back to Mountain Heritage,” Boone said.
Randy Laws coached Boone as an eighth grader and started coaching the Mountain Heritage team last season. He knew she was a leader as soon as she walked in the gym.
“She models so much for the rest of the girls. They look up to her,” he said. “She is as an outstanding person and high character as she is a volleyball player.”
Laws said Boone is on pace to amass 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs for her career and currently has 800 digs and is in the 800s for kills.
Last season she had 346 kills and 320 digs in 70 sets and led the team in both categories.
