Pisgah’s defense has put together back-to-back shutouts.

Franklin has been a big thorn in Pisgah’s backside.

You have to go all the way back to 2010 to find the last time the Black Bears won a game in this series, and it’s only happened once since the present version of the Western North Carolina Athletic Conference was constituted in 2009.

The No. 1 team in the Citizen-Times Best of the West rankings is long overdue, but that won’t make Friday’s 7:30 p.m. encounter in Canton any easier, according to Pisgah coach Brett Chappell.

“It’s probably not going to be high-scoring, there is going to be lots of defense,” Chappell said.

“Everything starts up front for (Franklin). You look back through the last few years and they’ve always been good up front on both lines and they are again this year. That being said, Brock (Kloeppel) is a good tailback and their quarterback (Andrew Moore) gives them some diversity.”

Pisgah’s defense is peaking at the right time — the Black Bears have pitched back-to-back shutouts against Madison (28-0 on Sept. 16) and East Henderson (50-0 last Friday). Jeff Albritton (8.0 tackles per game), Tanner Lanning (7.3), Houston Rogers (6.8) and Riley James (4.5) have been the unit’s most active playmakers.

Six different players scored touchdowns for Pisgah last Friday in East Flat Rock.

Tanner Wike passed for 102 yards, with 71 of them and two touchdowns going to Trey Morgan. Alabama recruit Michael Parrott carried the ball 18 times for 84 yards.
