Hayesville senior Maddie Payne has committed to play college softball and volleyball for LaGrange (Ga.).
Payne has been a captain of the Yellow Jackets volleyball team for three seasons and the setter has more than 1,500 career assists. She was the 2015 Big Smoky Mountain Conference Player of the Year. Payne has played club ball in the past for the Smoky Mountain Volleyball Club as well as the Biltmore Volleyball Academy.
She and Hayesville (15-0) are currently one of two undefeated volleyball teams left in Western North Carolina. The Yellow Jackets have reached the third round of the NCHSAA 1-A playoffs the past two years.
Payne is a former all-state, all-district and all-conference catcher in softball and has also played first base and third base. Her career batting average is over .400.
Finally, Payne was the 2015-16 school year’s female athlete of the year for Hayesville.
