Erwin senior Damien Ferguson became Western North Carolina’s career passing leader on Friday.
How high can he go?
Erwin senior Damien Ferguson (7,918 yards) left the Western North Carolina career record for passing (7,895) in the dust last Friday.
Ferguson (2,328 yards 26 touchdowns and six interceptions) now has potentially four more regular-season games and the NCHSAA playoffs to become the first mountain quarterback with 8,000 or 9,000, maybe even 10,000 yards.
The next game for the Warriors (3-4, 1-1) is Friday at McDowell (4-3, 1-1). Kickoff is 7 p.m.
“There is no room for overlooking anyone right now,” Erwin coach Mike Sexton said.
“(McDowell) always play us well and we don’t expect anything different Friday. They are big and athletic. The later in the season, the better they get.”
Ferguson overtook the former WNC leader for passing yards, 2010 Tuscola graduate Tyler Brosius, in last week’s 69-24 home win over Enka.
Five of Ferguson’s receiver have made 20 or more catches — C.J. Thompson (53 receptions for 849 yards and 14 touchdowns), Trey Martin (37 receptions for 537 yards and five touchdowns), Kealin Goode (33 receptions for 376 yards and four touchdowns), Isaiah Poore (23 receptions for 346 yards and three touchdowns) and Bryan Anuel (21 receptions for 186 yards).
