Pass the maple syrup.

Mountain Heritage’s offensive line has been credited with 114 pancake blocks through eight football games for the Cougars (7-1, 2-1).

For the uninitiated, a pancake block is when a potential tackler is laid flat on his back, generally by an offensive lineman or blocking fullback, hence the “pancake” term.

Who is keeping the griddle the warmest for Mountain Heritage?

Austen Rocha has a team-high 31 pancake blocks, followed by fellow senior Devan Woody (27) and sophomore Zeb Virnelson (22). Juniors J.T. Isham and Kane McCandless have nine apiece.

Is it any wonder that the Cougars are averaging 359.8 rushing yards per game?

Junior Denton (1,003 yards, nine touchdowns) went over the 1,000-yard mark for the first time in his career last Friday. He is a senior.

Even with the yardage hit that comes with sacks, junior Trey Robinson has run the ball the ball 115 times for 993 yards and a dozen touchdowns. He has also been afforded the time to pass for 929 yards and 13 touchdowns with six interceptions.

Mountain Heritage is open this week before travelling to arch rival Mitchell on Oct. 21.
