West Henderson’s volleyball team is 28-0 after Tuesday night’s playoff win over Marvin Ridge.
HENDERSONVILLE – Obviously, the competition gets better with every round of the NCHSAA 3-A volleyball playoffs.
So does West Henderson.
The nationally-ranked Falcons (28-0) remained flawless in the postseason Tuesday night – they haven’t lost a set in four matches after a 3-0 sweep of visiting Marvin Ridge.
Five seniors were at the forefront of the 25-18, 25-23, 25-21 win.
Presbyterian recruit Sierra Jones dished out 35 assists to go along with seven digs and three kills. Belmont recruit Mary Catherine Ball added 23 kills, 11 digs and a pair of aces. Destynee Galloway has committed to Francis Marion and had 11 digs and seven kills. Future Brevard College player Kasey West made 10 digs and Sarah Anne Vidak contributed three blocks.
Sophomore Casey Brown gave her undefeated team five kills, two aces and a pair of blocks.
“I feel like we bring out our best when we’re playing a good team like (Marvin Ridge),” Ball said.
“They were tough, and getting a sweep is absolutely crazy. We’re definitely motivated now. It feels like this is definitely the year for us to push through and get to state”
Next up for West Henderson is Thursday night’s 3-A Western Regional championship match at Cox Mill (32-0). The first ball will be served up at 6 p.m.
The two programs have been on a collision course all year long. Cox Mill, which is out of Concord, is ranked No. 21 in the latest USA TODAY High School Sports/American Volleyball Coaches Association Super 25 poll, while West Henderson is No. 22.
West Henderson reached this same stage of the playoffs in 2015 and lost to eventual state champ South Iredell.
“We knew that Marvin Ridge had some great players. We saw them about halfway through the season (a 3-1 win for West Henderson on Sept. 10),” Falcons coach Tiffany Lowrance said.
“This was an awesome win. And now we know that the next step is going to be huge. It’s going to be a great match.”
West Henderson is only two years removed from its last regional championship in volleyball. The Falcons beat Marvin Ridge that year for a berth in the state finals.
