East’s Bruce Gilliam Resigns as Varsity Boys’ Basketball Coach

HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. (March 25, 2016) – Bruce Gilliam, East Henderson High’s varsity boys’ basketball coach, announced his resignation Thursday, March 24. His resignation is effective immediately, as he is currently working on his Masters in Education at Gardner Webb and plans to pursue a job in administration in the fall.

Gilliam has coached both middle school and high school Eagles for the past 23 years, starting his HCPS coaching career at Flat Rock Middle in 1993. After 10 years at Flat Rock, Gilliam moved to East Henderson High and coached the junior varsity boys’ basketball team for a year before coaching the varsity girls’ team for three years. He served as assistant basketball coach at Flat Rock Middle before returning to East to coach the varsity boys’ team in 2012.

While he’s been on the court for his students’ games the last two decades, Gilliam said he’s looking forward to being on the sidelines for his own children’s games, and spending more time with his family was a large factor in his decision to resign.

“I would like to thank my assistant coaches Joel Thiery, Michael Robinson and Michael Bayne for their time, energy, commitment and loyalty to me and the basketball program,” Gilliam said.

East’s Assistant Principal and Athletic Director Doug Justice said, “I appreciate all the hard work Coach Gilliam has put into the Eagles’ basketball program, and we wish him the best in his future endeavors.”
