Madison’s softball team gathered for senior Sam Gosnell’s college signing in January.
Think that Madison softball was going to take a step back with five freshmen in its starting lineup?
Think again.
The Patriots are 4-0 ahead of Friday’s huge Western Highlands Conference game with defending champion Polk County (2-0). The first pitch should be thrown around 4 p.m. in Marshall.
“We’ve got a young team and it’s a little different for us than it has been in the past,” Madison coach Andy Gregg said.
“But those young kids have stepped up and done what they’re supposed to. Polk has always been a big rival and I think their kids have bought into that and realized it, too. We’re looking forward (to Friday) and hopefully we’ll play well.”
Milligan (Tenn.) recruit Sam Gosnell is 2-0 in the circle for the Patriots with 23 strikeouts in 14 innings pitched.
At the plate, the team’s leaders so far have been Gosnell (.533), Brooke Vilcinskas (.500), Hannah Jennings (.467), Savannah Rice (.455), Alexis Nix (.417), Sabrina Moorefield (.417) and Ashley Hamlin (.317).
Gosnell and Moorefield are the Patriots’ only two seniors.
