Hendersonville’s Kelton Mills has signed to play college golf for Alcorn State.

Hendersonville senior Kelton Mills locked in his commitment to play college golf Monday morning.

And that is exactly what was required to make it happen — commitment.

“Kelton decided this is something he wanted to do, and he put the time in,” Bearcats coach Jason Weaver said.

“He would stay after practice working with me as long as I could stay.”

Mills has signed with Alcorn State in Lorman, Miss.

The reigning Henderson County champion was an All-Western Highlands Conference golfer this spring who maintained a stroke average of 80. His best 18-hole round was 74.

“I’m excited and very honored to play college golf,” Mills said.

“Not a lot of people get this chance. This is a day that has probably changed my life. I like the campus a whole lot. Everyone that I met down there was very friendly and kind.”

The Bearcats play most of their practice rounds and matches at Hendersonville Country Club. Outside of that, Mills polished his game at Crooked Creek Golf Course.

“His short game has always been really good,” Weaver said.

“Kelton has good hands. His long irons are something we talked about a lot and something that really came around for him.”

The only downside to playing college golf is that Mills will have to give up his other sporting love, basketball.

“I’m definitely going to miss it,” Mills said. “It was heartbreaking to play my last game.”
