Smoky Mountain held a ceremonial groundbreaking for its artificial turf field Friday in Sylva.
As anyone who has seen Carr Hooper Stadium/Babe Howell Field lately can attest, the 15th artificial turf field in Western North Carolina is officially a go.
Workers have already ripped up the natural grass and are in the process of a $915,000 installation that will be complete in time for the 2016-17 school year. The Mustangs held a ceremonial groundbreaking on Friday attended by a representative of the Carolina Panthers, who have contributed a $200,000 grant to the project.
Special thanks to Mark Haskett for these photos from Friday’s groundbreaking.
