Jacob McCarthy and the Asheville American Legion Post 70 baseball team have outscored opponents, 68-13, this season.
ASHEVILLE – Asheville Post 70 coach Shane Galloway said Wednesday that he is “ready to get back in the swing of things.”
That shouldn’t be too hard with this lineup.
Post 70 has been swinging it, and swinging it abundantly well through four games – the undefeated Area IV Western Division leaders have outscored their American Legion opponents, 68-13.
Have the Cardinals’ bats cooled off after going more than a week without a baseball game? The answer will be revealed Thursday night when Asheville (4-0) hosts Cherryville Post 100 (2-4).
Game time is 7 p.m. from Roberson’s Holmes-Smith Field. A pregame ceremony will recognize a local chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America.
“This is a really good group to coach and they seem hungry which makes me excited,” Galloway said.
“We’ve had to take a small break, but everyone is very eager to play again.”
Post 70 won its first three games at home, including a memorable 34-run outburst in the season opener against Henderson County on May 24.
Asheville hasn’t played since its only road game – a 12-2 victory on June 1 at Taylorsville.
Galloway expects Cherryville to bring a formidable team to Skyland on Wednesday. Cherryville High won the NCHSAA 1-A championship last weekend.
Reynolds senior and Carson-Newman (Tenn.) recruit Kyle Cagle is expected to be the starting pitcher for the Cardinals.
“I’m sure their Legion team will be comprised of about half those kids (from Cherryville High),” Galloway said.
“It’ll be a good test, a game that should show us what we’re made of. I’m excited to see what this team does when we face little adversity. We haven’t faced much yet, but the real tell of a team is seeing what happens when you get down five runs late in a game. Will you point fingers or rally together?”
