LEDGER – Daron Williams got to live out a dream as the coach of his high school alma mater.

Williams won the second-most boys basketball games in Mitchell history (109). The Western Highlands Conference school announced his resignation on Wednesday.

Williams compiled a 109-76 record in 11 seasons.

“I look forward to spending more time trying to be a better follower of Christ, a better father and a better husband,” Williams said.

Williams is a 2000 Mitchell graduate who continued his career at Greensboro College. He had a laundry list of people to thank on Wednesday.

“I want to say a special thank you to former (Mitchell County Schools) Superintendent Dr. Bill Sears and former Principal Jack Brooks for their trust and belief in a 23-year-old,” Williams said in a written statement.

“I also want to thank our athletic director, Jamie Bell, and former athletic directors Darren Ponder and Ed Duncan, who have been consistently supportive of our efforts to achieve success in athletics. Our entire staff of high school, middle school and youth league coaches deserves immense credit for the hard work and numerous hours spent working with our students.”

The Mountaineers went 6-20 last season.

Their 2009-10 team reached a sectional-championship game under Williams and the 2011-12 squad won 19 games.

“Daron has been an important part of Mitchell County basketball almost all of his life. I applaud his hard work and commitment to our athletic programs,” Bell said.

“He plans to spend more time with his family and will continue to teach math in Mitchell County. Daron Williams is a true and loyal Mountaineer and will be greatly missed in our athletic department. We wish him well.”
