Courtney Pearson and the rest of the Enka softball team will play defending 4-A state champion D.H. Conley on April 30.
Enka softball coach Jennifer Kruk has said that another undefeated season is not necessarily a goal for the the nationally-ranked Sugar Jets.
They would rather be as prepared as possible for another run at the NCHSAA 3-A championship.
In that vein, how about this super-late addition to the nonconference schedule?
Enka (5-0) and defending 4-A state champ D.H. Conley (6-0) agreed to a game on Wednesday. The date is April 30 in Greenville, N.C., with a time still to be determined.
The defending 3-A state champion Sugar Jets have won a school-record 33 straight games after Tuesday’s 8-2 victory at North Buncombe.
They can expect an approximate 686-mile round trip to Conley for next month’s game. Enka athletic director Brian Carver said that the softball team will use the cross-state trip as a chance to tour East Carolina University and generally see some of the other side of the state.
In return, Conley has agreed to a 2017 game in Candler.
The Sugar Jets were part of preseason national rankings from USA TODAY (12th) and MaxPreps (30th), the highest spots by any team from the Tar Heel state regardless of classification.
