Monday is the first official day of football practice for all NCHSAA teams.

Many of them have been trying to squeeze in as much as they can before then, but Asheville High coaches and players took a different route on Saturday.

They volunteered their time for two local charities — Habitat for Humanity and MANNA FoodBank. First-year coach David Burdette and the Cougars called it their “Make a Difference Day.”

Asheville opens its season Aug. 19 at Franklin.
