Rosman athletic director Todd Anderson.

Rosman athletic director Todd Anderson.

Special thanks to Transylvania County Schools for this press release and photo:

Rosman’s Todd Anderson Earns Recognition As Outstanding Athletic Director

ROSMAN, NC — As Athletic Director for Rosman Middle and High Schools, Todd Anderson supports numerous winning teams and coaching staffs on the fields, courts, mats, and track. It covers a lot more than you might think.

Athletic directors take ownership of transportation, coordinating staff for matches, and making sure teams can travel safely across some long distances, then compete at their best while pursuing the right balance between school and sports.

Not long into his tenure as AD, Anderson proudly received an award given to the Rosman athletic program for excellence in sportsmanship, with no ejections for any athletes across all sports in 2013-14.

So it seemed very fitting when Coach Anderson recently earned an award on his own behalf, garnering a Region 8 Citation Award as Outstanding Athletic Director from the NC High School Athletic Directors’ Association.

Principal Jason Ormsby wasn’t surprised to see Anderson recognized among his peers. Coach Anderson has a reputation with Ormsby for taking charge of all the small, but significant, details that help students, staff, and the school community hit their targets all year long at both Rosman schools.

“Todd is that quiet person who accomplishes whatever needs to get done, and does not ask for any recognition for it,” Ormsby said. “People do not realize the time and effort that Coach Anderson gives to our school.  When something gets done, and you don’t know how it got finished without your thinking of it, it’s likely Todd already took care of it.”

Anderson came to Rosman five years ago from the Brevard College baseball program, and has served as AD for the past two years.

Prior to serving as athletic director, Anderson coached varsity golf at Rosman High for 3 years, working primarily on behalf of students in his role as Student Advocate.

At Brevard College from 1999 to 2010, he spent six years as assistant coach and five years as head coach in the baseball program, which had just joined the Southern Athletic Conference.

Pleased and surprised by this award from the NCADA, Anderson was still unable to attend the conference to accept the award. Even though it was just around the block at Asheville’s Grove Park Inn, he was already committed as a chaperone for the Rosman Senior Trip to Washington, DC, and New York.

“It is an honor to receive this award.  It is also an honor to be able to work at Rosman as the athletic director, and to be able to work with a great administration, teachers, staff and coaching staff each day.”

Sugar Jets launch repeat bid with shutout

Enka’s Kloyee Anderson dives to match a catch Wednesday in Candler.

CANDLER – Mariah Foxworth’s blood was boiling as she stood in the on-deck circle Wednesday.

Teams don’t often pitch around others to get to one of Enka’s best contact hitters.

Forestview did and lived to regret it in the first round of the NCHSAA 3-A softball playoffs at Griffin Park.

Foxworth was 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and four RBIs as the defending 3-A state champion Sugar Jets began their bid for a repeat with an 8-0 shutout of the visiting Jaguars.

Foxworth’s second double came in the bottom of the fourth inning after Forestview intentionally loaded the bases.

“It pumped me up and made me want to hit even more,” said Foxworth, a junior outfielder/pitcher.

“We’re all so excited about the playoffs being here. But we’re not trying to go too fast, we want to take every game one step at a time.”

Queens recruit Courtney Pearson only allowed two hits and no Jaguars baserunner advanced past second base against her and the Sugar Jets (19-3). Pearson had four strikeouts and did not give out any walks.

Enka had 14 hits as a team.

Leadoff Kloyee Anderson was 3-for-4 and the Alabama recruit scored twice. Addison Harris was 3-3 with a double, a walk and three runs scored. Brittany Fletcher went 2-3. Other players with RBIs were Pearson (two) and Payton Trantham (one).

“I was really torn whether to pitch Courtney or not, but she wanted the ball,” Sugar Jets coach Jennifer Kruk said.

“We’ve gotten that kind of leadership from her all season long. And everyone rallies behind her.”

Enka is a No. 5 seed in the 3-A playoffs and will play host to No. 12 Reynolds (14-6) in the second round. The two sides have agreed to a game Saturday at 1 p.m. — the Rockets have their prom later that night which prompted the earlier than usual start time.

The Sugar Jets won both regular-season meetings between the Mountain Athletic Conference teams (5-0 on March 23 and 7-1 on April 26).

“Other than ourselves, no one knows us as well as (Reynolds),” Kruk said.

“The girls are friends, they play travel ball together and spend the night at each other’s houses. They’re a scary team, a really good team.”

Patience pays off for Oklahoma-bound Shepherd

Asheville Christian Academy senior Jordan Shepherd signed with Okalahoma's basketball program earlier this week.

Asheville Christian Academy senior Jordan Shepherd signed with Okalahoma’s basketball program earlier this week.

SWANNANOA – When Jordan Shepherd decommitted from James Madison and reopened his recruiting because of a coaching change there were a lot of interested schools.

But none of them caught the Asheville Christian Academy guard’s eye. That was until the Oklahoma Sooners came along.

“It was long grueling process with recruiting at that time,” Shepherd said.

“As soon as I decommitted, there were a lot of schools that were interested, but as time went on things kind of fell off. I was just being patient the whole time and then the whole Oklahoma thing happened in one week so it was a quick process for Oklahoma.”

This past season, Shepherd averaged 19.2 points, 5.1 assists, 5.1 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game for the Lions (19-9) and earned NCISAA 2-A all-state and All-Carolinas Athletic Association recognition. The 6-foot-2, 175-pound senior, who is from Buncombe County, was also named the 2015 CAA Player of the year.

Shepherd’s main concern was his connection to the coaching staff and that is something he felt with Oklahoma, said ACA coach Andy Ray.

“I think it’s a good decision for him. I think he is very comfortable with the coaching staff and all along that’s been a big piece for him to find a place where he just felt like these guys are 100 percent on his side,” Ray said. “It’s a great opportunity. He’s going to get better and he’s going to get stronger. He’s going to get all those things that he needs in a great setting.”

The biggest attraction for Shepherd to Oklahoma was their recent development of high-caliber players.

“You see Buddy Hield and Isaiah Cousins and people of that caliber that they develop. That’s what stuck out to me the most,” Shepherd said.

One of the biggest things Shepherd is looking forward to is playing under Oklahoma head coach Lon Kruger.

“I believe in him as a coach and just really looking forward to playing under him and in front of all the Oklahoma fans and hopefully doing what they did last year,” Shepherd said.

Oklahoma isn’t the only big name school that was interested in Shepherd.

“Last fall we had Wisconsin call three or four times wanting some game film and DePaul University looked at him,” Ray said.

“It’s not like it totally went from the mid-major level with James Madison to out of nowhere, there is one high-level school. There were bits and pieces along the way, the difference being with Oklahoma, the whole staff decided this is a kid that they wanted to invest in.”

Ray’s primary focus throughout the process was to make sure to create different opportunities during the season and offseason for Shepherd to compete against kids at higher levels and put him in places for coaches to see him.

His other two roles have been to make sure Shepherd is as prepared as possible, skill-wise, to compete at the next level and to provide information to Shepherd and his father throughout the recruitment.

“They did a great job digging into the schools as far as their academics, their coaching staff and their rosters. They really did their legwork as a father and son. Our role was simply to assist and to partner with them and do whatever they needed,” Ray said.

Shepherd isn’t yet sure what his role will be at Oklahoma, but he knows he will have to work for whatever he gets and nothing will be given to him.

“It’s all depending on how I play in practice and in games and stuff like that,” Shepherd said.

When it all boiled down, Shepherd went where he felt the deepest connection.

“Lots of good coaches and lots of good programs have been through the door and there’s nothing wrong with any of them. It’s just that connection piece and I feel like he felt that there. It’s a very good national program and it’s a great opportunity,” Ray said.

Rhodarmer hits the ground running at Madison

Pisgah alum Ben Rhodarmer is the new athletic director and football coach at Madison.

Pisgah alum Ben Rhodarmer is the new athletic director and football coach at Madison.

MARSHALL – Ben Rhodarmer grew up in Canton, played most of his college football career at Mars Hill and has coached at several nearby schools.

Needless to say, Rhodarmer is a local coach who didn’t want to leave the area.

Now, he has the chance to be a head football coach locally.

Rhodarmer was recently named the coach and athletic director at Madison, returning to the area where he spent his college years. After two years at Appalachian State, he transferred to Mars Hill and finished his career as a wide receiver, ending up living around the college for six years.

“I loved the area and got the opportunity to go back out there,” said Rhodarmer, who gets his first head-coaching job after he interviewed for several other top jobs over the years. “It’s a good place full of good people with the same values I learned growing up.”

Rhodarmer has coached football at his high school alma mater, Pisgah, for the past four years. He has coached tennis for two seasons and been a basketball coach for three years.

He’ll get an early-season rematch with his former team as the Bears travel to Madison on Sept. 16.

Rhodarmer takes the position after Patriots alum Mark Gosnell resigned from both positions in late February. Gosnell was 35-48 during his tenure as football coach and led the team to a program-best 13-2 mark in 2012.

Since Rhodarmer accepted the job he has traveled to Madison each day to oversee weight room sessions with his new team.

“We’re in the weight room right now trying to get stronger and better,” said Rhodarmer, who also had coaching stops as an assistant at Mountain Heritage, Tuscola and Reynolds. “That’s the goal — to get better each day.”

The 37-year-old has coached for 13 years and readied himself for a head-coaching position by overseeing each aspect of the game at his different stops, serving as offensive, defensive and special teams coordinator.

“I think it is tremendous help to be able to be on both sides of the ball and seeing the preparation it takes on each side,” said Rhodarmer, who played football, basketball, baseball and track in high school. “Having the understanding of both sides is a big help.”

Rhodarmer said he is still piecing together a staff and doesn’t know if he’ll oversee the offense or defense this season.

He knows that the Patriots, who were 2-9 last season, return several skill position players, including running back Junior Denton and quarterback Colby Edwards. Rhodarmer is also excited about the big offensive linemen who return and several others who should come up from junior varsity.

He isn’t ready, though, to come out and say what his new team will look like on opening night.

“I’m learning the kids and they are learning me,” Rhodarmer said. “My job is to put them in a position where they can be successful. That’s what I’m going to try and do, so I don’t want to rush into saying what we’ll run yet.”

Schmidt a born leader for Bearcats

Hendersonville seniors Michael Schmidt (Air Force), left, and Michael Cook (Guilford) signed to play college football last month.

Hendersonville seniors Michael Schmidt (Air Force), left, and Michael Cook (Guilford) signed to play college football last month.

HENDERSONVILLE – Michael Schmidt could have rested in the winter and spring, opting out of basketball and baseball at Hendersonville High to prep for college football.

Instead, he excelled in those sports also.

Schmidt, the all-time leading passer at the school, leaves on June 24 to begin training at the Air Force Academy, where he has been recruited to play quarterback.

“I’ve always loved to take a leadership role on whatever team I’m on,” Schmidt said. “Being on America’s team, I feel like that’s the best team to be on. Hopefully I’ll find a home there.”

Schmidt was among the school’s best athletes and students (he’s ranked No. 11 in his class) this year.

He led the Bearcats – and all other Western North Carolina teams – with a .566 batting average and he led his team with 30 hits, 24 RBIs, 11 doubles, two triples and two homers.

On the basketball court, he averaged 11.4 points and 3.8 rebounds per game.

He split time on the football field his sophomore year and wasn’t sure if his skills were enough to earn a scholarship. He only threw for 607 yards, completing just 40 percent of his throws, that year.

Then he threw for 3,004 yards and 30 scores as a junior.

“After my sophomore year I didn’t really think I had a chance to play college football,” he said. “After the success of my junior year, it seemed a little more realistic.”

As a senior he outdid his junior numbers, as he threw for an area-best 3,312 yards and 31 touchdowns with 14 interceptions. He also ran for 1,051 yards and 14 touchdowns.

“He was a field general,” coach Eric Gash said of the 6-foot-3, 188-pounder. “He maintained poise in every aspect of the game, whether it was third-and-short or fourth-and-long. I didn’t hesitate to go for it on fourth-and-whatever because I knew the potential he had.”

That poise continued when he was moved to catcher on the baseball team. The Bearcats lost eight seniors and having Schmidt behind the plate would be a senior leader in a position to help everyone.

It was a position that Schmidt played one travel baseball teams. Usually, he said, he played up an age group or two to be with his brother.

“I was the youngest on the team and would play wherever they needed me,” he said. “I learned catching was one of my stronger positions.”

“He’s just one of those kids who will be hard to replace,” baseball coach Mark Cook said. “I was just happy to have him on our team. His leadership is one of the big things. He’s a better person than he is an athlete. He helps and shows the young kids a lot of things and the right way to do things.”

While playing three sports and being a top student often consumes much of his time, Schmidt also enjoys outdoor activities like fishing and hiking and doing community service. He’s especially fond of working with Special Olympics athletes.

Schmidt isn’t from a military family but applied to the Air Force and Naval academies.

“The camaraderie and the opportunities after school,” he said, “along with the physical and academics, seemed like the best fit for me as a student and athlete.”

Warlassies keep fighting in 2-A softball playoffs

Caitlyn Ledford (3) and Owen have advanced to next week's second round of the NCHSAA 2-A softball playoffs.

Caitlyn Ledford (3) and Owen have advanced to next week’s second round of the NCHSAA 2-A softball playoffs.

SWANNANOA – Every step in these NCHSAA 2-A softball playoffs is a new experience for Owen’s young core of players.

Next week awaits after the biggest win yet for the Warlassies.

Jaiden Tweed struck out 13 batters Thursday at R-S Central and broke a 1-1 tie with her RBI single in the eighth inning. Tweed and fellow sophomore Ashley Valencia were both 2-for-3 in a second-round game that Owen took, 2-1.

Bria Crompton went 1-3 with a double and an RBI and Ari Pridmore was 1-3.

Defensively, the 12th-seeded Warlassies (15-5) played an error-free game behind Tweed to reach the third round against either No. 20 Mount Pleasant (13-12) or No. 4 West Lincoln (20-1).

Owen lost in the first round of the 2015 playoffs and had a 9-7-1 overall record. This year’s Warlassies were the runners-up in the Western Highlands Conference with only four seniors — Olivia Presley, Alivia Brigham, Samantha Parham and Hannah Quinn.

“We warmed up with good intensity (Thursday) and maintained that intensity,” sophomore Caitlyn Ledford said.

“Towards the end we got a lot more confident and people came up really big. We’re a pretty young team and I know we’re all excited to see how far we can go.”

Tweed and the Warlassies were one out away from a shutout Thursday when she was called for an illegal pitch, allowing an unearned run to score from third base. The Hilltoppers (20-3) could not hold off Owen forever.

Valencia singled in the eighth, then moved into scoring position with a stolen base. She was able to come home on Tweed’s single.

Thursday was the seventh consecutive win for the Warlassies, who are coached by Jenny Johnson.

“The good thing about this team is that everyone knows their job and we trust each other to get it done,” said Crompton, who is a junior.

“I’m used to playing with a lot of these girls from travel ball. When we get down, we pick each other up.”
