Black Bears shut out Sun Valley in 3rd round game

Pisgah sophomore first baseman Jordan Taylor.

Pisgah sophomore first baseman Jordan Taylor.

CANTON – Sun Valley is only two years removed from its last state-championship run in softball.

As of Tuesday though, the Spartans are just plain removed from the current NCHSAA 3-A playoffs.

The team from Monroe ran into a buzzsaw in the third round – a Pisgah squad which is peaking at the right time.

Sophomores Madison Whitted and Jordan Kielson combined to pitch a shutout. And the Black Bears broke open a 6-0 home win with all their runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings off of North Carolina recruit Brittany Pickett.

Emma Sorrells was 2-for-2, while Brooklyn Allen, Makala Beaver and Miranda Connor were each 1-3 with an RBI.

First baseman Jordan Taylor’s two-run homer to deep center field was a no-doubter from the moment it left the 10th grader’s bat in the fifth inning.

“This win feels amazing,” Taylor said.

“We all have a big goal for this team and I think we’re going to push it as far as we can.”

The Western North Carolina Athletic Conference champions have won 11 consecutive games and have yet to be scored on in the playoffs. That means they have outscored three opponents – Freedom, Fred T. Foard and now Sun Valley – by a combined margin of 19-0.

Pisgah (21-4) will be home once again Friday against either No. 18 Marvin Ridge (18-7) or No. 10 West Iredell (17-6).

Whitted started off Tuesday’s game in the circle and pitched 5.2 innings. She scattered three hits and one walk to go along with seven strikeouts. Kielson then came on for a little over an inning of relief, but was no less generous to the Spartans (19-8), who stranded multiple baserunners in the fifth and seventh innings.

Meanwhile, the Black Bears were getting busy at the plate.

Allen’s RBI single in the third inning came with two outs. Beaver made it 2-0 with a double in the fourth inning that hugged the right foul line before hooking around first base.

Connor followed an RBI single. Taylor’s homer — she drove out an inside fastball — was the cherry on top.

“We talk all the time about fundamental softball,” Pisgah coach Heidi Morgan said.

“The process is more important than the result. I thought we did a good job in a lot of areas today. We have a lot of respect for Sun Valley. Brittany Pickett is by-far the best pitcher we’ve seen all year. By far.”

Sugar Jets pounce on playoff foe

Addison Harris and Enka beat Cox Mill, 12-2, in Tuesday's third round of the NCHSAA 3-A softball playoffs.

Addison Harris and Enka beat Cox Mill, 12-2, in Tuesday’s third round of the NCHSAA 3-A softball playoffs.

CANDLER – Enka started off quickly Tuesday night for its second straight mercy-rule victory in the 3-A state softball playoffs.

The Sugar Jets (21-3) scored three runs in the first inning to beat Cox Mill, 12-2, and advance to Friday’s fourth round.

After Cox Mill (19-7) responded by cutting the lead to 3-1 in the top of the third, Enka senior Addison Harris stretched the lead back to three with a solo home run in the bottom of the inning.

Ahead 4-1, Enka then poured on four runs in each of the next two innings to force a mercy rule by the end of the fifth inning.

Enka’s No. 3 through No. 6 hitters – Addison Harris, Mariah Foxworth, Payton Trantham, and Dani Harris – went a combined 10-for-10 in the game, batting in 11 of the 12 runs for the Sugar Jets.

Alabama recruit Kloyee Anderson went 1-for-2, but contributed from the basepaths by scoring three runs.

For Cox Mill, Chelsea DiGregorio led the way with a double and two RBIs, while Paysia Reed and Kristen Stafford both went 3-for-3 in the losing effort.

Enka, the defending state 3-A champion, looks to be on pace to make another run to the final as the fourth round approaches, having won its first three playoff games by a combined 28 runs. However, coach Jennifer Kruk would not allow herself to think ahead.

“We look one game at a time, so right now we are looking at Friday. Hopefully we get past there, and then we can talk about the next week, and then the next week,” Kruk said.

Despite the lack of adversity throughout the start of the playoffs, Kruk felt that her team was still prepared for what came next.

“We’ve had close games during the season, so I think we’re hopefully starting to peak at the right time of the year,” said Kruk.

“We’ve really been concentrating on working on some things hitting-wise, and working on some things that weren’t working, and I think that we finally tweaked a few things.”

For now, the cliche holds true that the Sugar Jets will look to take it one game at a time.

“Right now, (winning state) is not a goal; every time we have a game it’s different. Today was to be 3-0, because we decided we started our season over when playoffs started. Right now our next goal is to be 4-0,” added Kruk.

Enka will either host Crest or travel to South Point on Friday as the Sugar Jets look to continue the run towards to their third-ever state title in fast-pitch play.

Roberson graduate Cameron Maybin is an outfielder for the Detroit Tigers.

Roberson alum Cameron Maybin is back in Major League Baseball as of this week.

And back with the team that originally drafted him out of high school nonetheless.

Maybin is batting .667 with an RBI and pair of stolen bases for the Detroit Tigers (18-21) since making his season debut on Monday. He was activated from the disabled list after recovering from a wrist injury.

The Tigers selected Maybin with the 10th overall pick in the 2005 MLB draft.

He went on to play for Atlanta, Miami and San Diego. Maybin was part of a trade between the Braves and Tigers back in November.

Enka's Turner signs with UNC Asheville

Enka senior Sage Turner has signed to run college cross country and track for UNC Asheville.

CANDLER – Tapping into his full potential as a distance runner sounds like a worthy goal for Enka senior Sage Turner.

He is planning to do just that the next four years at UNC Asheville.

Turner signed to run cross country and track for the Bulldogs on Wednesday morning inside the Jets’ media center.

A big crowd was on hand to support an endurance athlete who is a former Buncombe County and Mountain Athletic Conference cross country champion, but was also adept enough at basketball to lead the Jets in scoring (14.7 points per game) last winter.

Enka senior Sage Turner has committed to run cross country and track for UNC Asheville.

Enka senior Sage Turner has committed to run cross country and track for UNC Asheville.

“I like the way that (the Bulldogs) train,” Turner said.

“They build athletes and not just runners. I’m definitely excited about being part of a Division I program and finding out what I can do.”

Turner’s final meet for the Jets is Friday’s NCHSAA 3-A outdoor track competition in Greensboro.

He was the runner-up in the 800-meter run and 1,600-meter run at Saturday’s 3-A Western Regional track meet hosted by Reynolds. Turner logged a personal-record time in the 800 (2 minutes, 1.51 seconds) and ran 4:29.73 in the 1,600.

Tuner’s entire 2015 cross country season was wiped out by a foot injury. But as a junior, he won Buncombe and MAC individual championships. His personal-best time for a 5-kilometer (3.1 miles) race is 16:35.25.

Enka athletic director/basketball coach Brian Carver told everyone gathered for Wednesday’s signing that it was a little personal for him, as he and the Turner family live in the same neighborhood. Carver said he knew that Turner’s heart was ultimately more in running than anything else.

“I’m going to miss basketball a lot,” Turner said.

“I can remember everyone getting really emotional before our last basketball game. It hasn’t been that way with track yet for me. I’m ready for the future.”

Hailey Cook is a junior for the Western Carolina University women’s track team.

Hendersonville graduate Hailey Cook was named the Southern Conference Women’s Track Performer of the Year in field events on Wednesday.

More from her college, Western Carolina University:

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina track & field head coach Danny Williamson was named both the Southern Conference Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Coach of the Year after leading the Catamounts to a sweep of the 2016 Southern Conference Outdoor Championships. Sophomore Henry Kiedy was named Men’s co-Most Outstanding Track Performer, junior Hailey Cook was named the Women’s Most Outstanding Field Performer and Bri Anna Adams picked up co-Freshman of the Year honors announced the league’s office Wednesday.

Williamson earned a men’s and women’s sweep of Coach of the Year accolades, marking the fifth time in the league’s history that a coach has recorded an outright sweep in the outdoor season. Williamson also accomplished the feat in 1999. This is his seventh men’s outdoor Coach of the Year honor and his eighth for the women’s outdoor season.

Kiedy won his second straight 400m title with a season-best time of 47.23 seconds and was an integral part of the Catamounts’ two relay squads, which both posted first place finishes. He also finished at the 200m distance.

Cook ran away with the women’s field award with victories in the discus throw, hammer throw and shot put. The junior was especially impressive in the discus, as her toss of 45.36m (148-10) was a league-best mark during the outdoor season. Her win in the shot put, made possible by an effort of 14.71m (48- 3.25), gave the Catamount women a slim 1.5-point lead over Samford going into the final event of the day.

Adams recorded a second place finish in the 200m, a third place showing in the 100m and was a member of the Catamounts’ first place relay squads.

Carolina Day senior Mikayla Ray has signed to play college basketball for William Peace out of Raleigh.

Special thanks to the Wildcats for this press release and the photos:

Mikayla Ray commits to William Peace University

Mikayla Ray, a CAA All-Conference performer in basketball and member of the 2015-2016 NCISAA 2A State Championship Wildcat basketball team, committed to play college basketball for  the Pacers of William Peace University.

Located in Raleigh, N.C., William Peace, a member of the USA South Conference, competes at the NCAA Division III level.

Ray, father of former Asheville High and Appalachian State football standout Mickey Ray, toured William Peace while in Raleigh for this year’s NCISAA 2A Basketball Championships – it was this visit, along with several conversations with newly appointed Pacer coach, Donald Kent,  that sealed the deal for Ray.

“After spending time on campus, discussing their academic and athletic programs, it was evident William Peace would be a great place for me to continue my career. Being part of a team matters to me, and I look forward to contributing to William Peace community”, said Mikalya.

According to Wildcat coach Joe Carrington, “It has been a pleasure for the basketball staff to work with Mikayla for the past 2 years. She was instrumental in helping our team win the NCISSA state championship this past season. Her contributions will not soon be forgotten. We are very excited for her opportunity and are confident that she will quickly become a key part of the Peace program. We wish her the best of luck as she moves on to her next challenge.”

Ray tore her ACL in November, but fought hard through rehab to join her Wildcat teammates with 4 games left in the regular season, helping to lead the Wildcats to their 6th consecutive NCISAA girls basketball state championship with her spirited and successful play.

In addition to her excellent effort on the basketball court, Mikayla is a standout member of the defending NCISAA 2A state champion Wildcat Track and Field team. As a shot putter, Ray is the defending NCISAA 2A shot put champion and will look to defend this title this week in Raleigh.

At the 55th WNC Sports Awards Banquet, held at the Grove Park Inn on Sunday, May 15th, Ray received one of ten scholarships given to student-athletes to support her collegiate endeavors.
