Enka will try to become back-to-back state champions at this weekend’s NCHSAA 3-A softball series in Greensboro.

  • Enka 8
  • C.B. Aycock 6 FINAL

Keep checking back here for live, continuous updates from Game 1 of the NCHSAA 3-A championship softball series. Hit refresh/reload on your web browser to view the latest update.

10:59: Reminder that Game 2 of this best-of-three series is Saturday at 2 p.m. Check back here for another live blog.

10:58: Game over.

10:57: Two outs.

10:56: RUN AYCOCK. Hannah Vinson grounds out, but another run scores. No one on base, one out.

10:55: RUN AYCOCK. Tanika Powell hits an RBI triple. Still no outs.

10:54: RUN AYCOCK. Fourth error of the night allows Aycock to score its fourth run. Runner on third base with no outs.

10:52: Leadoff single for Aycock. A common theme tonight.

10:50: Aycock finally gets out of the inning. Enka scores four runs off of four hits with two outs.

10:48: New pitcher for Aycock is Allison Singleton. She is a right-hander.

10:46: RUN ENKA. Addison Harris singles. The floodgates have opened.

10:45: RUN ENKA. RUN ENKA. Claire Crout pounds a double into the gap in left-center field.. Two runs come around. Crout is only a freshman.

10:44: Huge, huge insurance run for Enka.

10:42: RUN ENKA. Kloyee Anderson singles up the middle. Runners on first and second with two outs.

10:40: Brittany Fletcher singles. Runners on first and second with two outs and Kloyee Anderson coming to bat.

10:39: Whitney Fletcher singles. Runner on first with two outs.

10:38: Two outs and no runners on for the Sugar Jets.

10:36: Only four hits and three errors for Enka.

10:34: On to the final inning. Gotta think Enka needs a run or two here. Aycock’s first three hitters are 9-1-2 in the bottom of the seventh.

10:33: For the second time tonight, Enka first baseman Addison Harris turns an unassisted double play. Like before she caught a liner and then tagged first base for the out.

10:30: Leadoff is on again for Aycock as result of an Enka error. Runner on first with no outs.

10:28: Make that 11. Headed to the bottom of the sixth.

10:25: Aycock pitcher Allie Phillips has retired 10 straight Enka hitters.

10:22: One run on two hits for Aycock.

10:21: RUN AYCOCK. Madison Walton grounds out to first base but it’s enough to score a run.

10:20: Runners on second and third with one out.

10:17: Runners on first and second with no outs. Another bunt single for the Golden Falcons.

10:15: Runner on first with no outs for Aycock. A lot of slap hitters in their lineup with a lot of speed.

10:13: Nothing for Enka. Headed to the bottom of the fifth.

10:12: Two outs, no one on for Enka here in the fifth.

10:07: Aycock strands her. End of the fourth inning.

10:05: Mackenzie Wheeler singles to start things off for Aycock. A sacrifice bunt moves her to second base. One out.

10:02: A 1-2-3 inning for the Sugar Jets.

10:01: Two quick outs for Enka. Aycock’s second baseman just robbed Courtney Pearson of a hit.

9:57: Hannah Vinson singles to give Aycock a runner on first with no outs, BUT two batters later, Allison Singleton lines out to Addison Harris who then doubles up Vinson by tagging first base. Double play and end of the third inning.

9:54: That’s the end of the Enka threat. Two runs on two hits gives the Sugar Jets their first lead.

9:53: RUN ENKA. RUN ENKA. Addison Harris crushes a two-run homer to right field.

9:51: Leadoff double by Kloyee Anderson. Runner on second with no outs.

9:49: Enka back at the top of its order. Alabama recruit Kloyee Anderson will lead off.

9:45: Two-out single by Aycock leadoff Connor Vinson who then steals second. But she is stranded. That’s two innings in the books here in Greensboro.

9:43: Two outs and nobody on.

9:42: That’s the end of the top of the second. Good answer by the Sugar Jets.

9:41: Phillips has thrown a lot of pitches this inning for Aycock. Full count to Brittany Fletcher.

9:39: RUN ENKA. RUN ENKA. Whitney Fletcher doubles to center field to tie the game. Was a shot to the fence.

9:38: 3-1 count to Whitney Fletcher.

9:36: Courtney Pearson draws a walk. Runners on first and second with two outs.

9:34: Dani Harris hits a bloop single to center field. Runner on first with two outs.

9:33: Two outs.

9:32: Mariah Foxworth makes good contact, but lines out to left field. One out.

9:30: End of the first inning.

9:29: Runners on the corners after another Enka error. Sugar Jets look nervous.

9:28: Allison Singleton singles up the middle. Runner on first with two outs.

9:25: RUN AYCOCK. RUN AYCOCK. Hannah Vinson hits a bunt single and then comes all the way around on a throwing error by Enka.

9:24: Tanika Powell bunts her way onto base. Powell then steals second base. Still one out.

9:23: Great play at shortstop by Claire Crout to record the first out for Enka.

9:20: Sugar Jets go down in order. Headed to the bottom of the first inning.

9:18: Kloyee Anderson grounds out. One out, nobody on.

9:17: OK, here we go.

9:16: Starting pitcher for Aycock (Phillips) is a lefty.

9:14: Enka is the visiting team on the scoreboard and will bat first.

9:12: Payton Trantham receives a pregame award from the NCHSAA for sportsmanship.

9:10: Starting lineups are taking place now. We will start shortly.

9:06: Couple banks of lights have come back on and some are still out.

8:57: The NCHSAA is already discussing its options. One of them floating out there is finishing the series on Sunday if necessary.

8:55: Lights have not come back on yet. Almost pitch darkness here in the stadium.

8:47: Lights were back on for about five minutes but are now out again. Chance this game will be pushed to tomorrow.

8:46: And for C.B. Aycock – Connor Vinson (9), Tanika Powell (5), Hannah Vinson (8), Madison Walton (6), Allison Singleton (7), Mackenzie Wheeler (3), Cassandra Lassiter (4), Abbie Walton (2), Taylor Puetz (3) and Allie Phillips (1/FLEX)

8:41: Here is the lineup for Enka – Kloyee Anderson (4), Claire Crout (6), Addison Harris (3), Mariah Foxworth (9), Payton Trantham (5), Dani Harris (7), Courtney Pearson (1), Whitney Fletcher (DP), Brittany Fletcher (8), Taylor Duncan (2/FLEX).

8:36: Lights are still not working.

8:28: The lights are back off.

8:14: UNCG is saying that tonight’s game will start around 8:55.

8:08: The lights are on here now which is another positive development.

8:06: South Granville just won, 5-4. Field is being cleared for the 3-A game.

7:59: Will try to give you guys any information I can on the updated start time when we have one.

7:58: Couple updates and neither is good. Game 1 of the 2-A series between South Granville and West Lincoln is tied 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning as we speak. So Enka will not play at 8 p.m., 9 may be more realistic. Also, UNC Greensboro officials are working to get the lights on, but no luck yet.

7:57: Hello from Greensboro.

Incoming freshmen for the Roberson football program took part in a "commitment ceremony" earlier this week in Skyland.

J.D. Dinwiddie is looking to build a football program from the ground up in his first year as Roberson’s coach.

The Rams’ new helmet design was on display earlier this week when they held a “commitment ceremony” for incoming freshmen from Cane Creek and Valley Springs middle schools.

Players took part in a signing which represented their promise to commit to the Roberson program.

Dinwiddie was hired to replace former coach Chris Deal back in January. He guided North Henderson to its first winning season (7-5) since 2000 last fall.

Sugar Jets overcome errors, take Game 1

GREENSBORO – Everything about Friday’s Game 1 of the NCHSAA 3-A championship softball series was uncharacteristic for Enka.

Except the final result.

The Sugar Jets (25-3) overcame four errors to hold on for a shaky 8-6 win over C.B. Aycock at UNC Greensboro.

Game 2 of the best-of-three series is Saturday at 2 p.m. Game 3, if necessary, would be played at 5 or 8 p.m.

“I don’t know that we’ve ever made four errors in a game,” Enka coach Jennifer Kruk said.

“We knew what (Aycock) wanted to do and we still couldn’t stop them. Their strength is their speed and their first two hitters, in particular, were impressive. We had a big talk (Thursday) and the message was to keep your eyes straight ahead and not in the rear-view mirror, or the past. And that’s what we’ll do with this game. We got the win, that’s the most important thing, and we’ll move on.”

Kloyee Anderson, Addison Harris and Whitney Fletcher each had two hits for the Sugar Jets. Fletcher’s two run double tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the second inning. In the third, Harris connected for her team-best ninth homer of the season. She finished with three RBIs. Anderson and Fletcher had two apiece.

A four-run rally in the top of the seventh inning — all scored with two outs nonetheless — by the defending state champs proved to be necessary. Aycock answered with three runs in its final at bat. The Golden Falcons (29-3) were led by Tanika Powell, who was 3-4 with an RBI.

Enka ace Courtney Pearson (20-1) pitched a complete game, allowing five earned runs, 10 hits and no walks. She had one strikeout.

Friday’s game was delayed more than an hour when UNC Greensboro could not get its stadium lights to function. The final out was recorded just before 11 p.m.

Enka softball repeated as NCHSAA 3-A champions on Saturday at UNC Greensboro.

GREENSBORO – Something about UNC Greensboro brings out the best in the Harris sisters.

Enka senior Addison Harris got every bit of an inside fastball Saturday afternoon, hitting it off the scoreboard for a three-run walkoff homer in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The first baseman and Mars Hill recruit was mobbed by her teammates at home plate. She and the Sugar Jets are back-to-back NCHSAA 3-A softball champions after beating C.B. Aycock, 5-3, in 90-degree heat.

Enka swept the best-of-three series to become the first Western North Carolina fast-pitch program since Owen (1999 and 2000) to repeat as a state champion.

Harris went 3-for-4 and was named the series’ most valuable player. Her older sister, Jordan, received the same award in 2015 and will be a future teammate at Mars Hill.

“I’m so glad I could do it for my teammates and my community,” Harris said. “This is such an amazing feeling. It’s the best experience I’ve ever had.”

Sugar Jets coach Jennifer Kruk was part of previous Enka fast-pitch state championships as a player (1996) and coach (2015).

“I almost threw up at home plate,” Kruk said jokingly. “(Aycock) is a very good team. We just battled all day long.”

The Sugar Jets (26-3) left the bases loaded in the first inning but were still able to grab an early 1-0 lead. Alabama recruit Kloyee Anderson led off with a single, stole second and then came home on an RBI single from Harris.

Enka expanded its lead to 2-0 in the fourth inning when Courtney Pearson’s chopper to shortstop was misplayed.

Aycock (29-4) tied things up in the sixth and briefly took a 3-2 lead by plating a run in the top of the seventh. Anderson and Brittany Fletcher got on base in the bottom of the seventh to set the table for Harris.

Pearson (21-1) won nearly 70 games in her varsity career and got another seven-inning victory in the circle Saturday.

Sugar Jets win one for Mya Grace

Enka softball players celebrate after repeating as the NCHSAA 3-A softball champions on Saturday in Greensboro.

GREENSBORO – Mya Grace, this one was for you.

Enka softball players dabbed away tears Saturday as one of their youngest fans was brought onto the field prior to Game 2 of the NCHSAA 3-A championship series at UNC Greensboro.

Some onlookers wondered aloud what it was all about. The Sugar Jets (26-3) knew, and had all the motivation they needed.

Mars Hill recruit Addison Harris’ three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning closed the door on a 5-3 win over C.B. Aycock and a sweep in the best-of-three series.

Western North Carolina’s first back-to-back NCHSAA softball champ in 16 years got a lift from the presence of Mya Grace Phillips. She is a first grader from the Hominy Valley who is battling Burkitt lymphoma.

Enka players signed a ball Saturday for Mya Grace and personally gave her a tie-dyed T-shirt that matched the ones they wore in Greensboro. Mya Grace was wearing a protective mask to shield her from germs at UNCG.

“There really aren’t words to explain it,” said Harris, a senior first baseman who was named the most valuable player of the 3-A state series.

“(Mya Grace) is my hero for everything that she’s going through. She is incredible.”

Mya Grace was first diagnosed with a form of cancer last fall. Her parents, Logan (2000) and Kelly (2001), are both Enka graduates. #TeamMyaGrace has become a local hashtag on Twitter and there have been numerous area fundraisers held in the child’s honor.

“She is fighting right now, and it makes all of us want to fight harder,” Enka senior pitcher Courtney Pearson said.

“It was so great to have her here.”

Pearson (21-1) pitched her second complete-game win in less than 48 hours Saturday. The Queens recruit won about 70 games in her varsity career. Sugar Jets coach Jennifer Kruk can’t imagine any pitcher in the program’s past can say as much.

“Courtney was just a horse,” Kruk said.

“Not only today, but all season long. She knew that we were really going to lean on her this year. She came through every time we needed her. We never put this team in a comfortable situation with our schedule. It was all about challenging ourselves and seeing who would step up.”

Harris was 3-for-4 Saturday with all three of her RBIs coming off the home run that pinged off the UNCG scoreboard in right-center field.

“I would have loved to have seen how far that ball had gone without the scoreboard there,” Kruk said.

Kloyee Anderson, a sophomore who has committed to Alabama, was 2-4 with two runs scored. Danielle Harris went 2-2 with a pair of singles. Payton Trantham was 1-2 with a run scored.

Texas Woman’s recruit Brittany Fletcher had a hit in one of her two at-bats and made several good defensive stops for Enka in center field.

The Sugar Jets will lose four seniors to graduation — Fletcher, Harris, Pearson and Shruti Patel. That group only lost to one North Carolina team (Greenville’s D.H. Conley) in the past two years.

Owen (1999 and 2000 in 2-A) was previously the last mountain softball program to enjoy back-to-back state championships in NCHSAA play.
