Erwin alum Garrett Brown recently completed his college baseball career at Western Carolina University.

Erwin alum Garrett Brown recently completed his college baseball career at Western Carolina University.

Garrett Brown was drafted for the second time by a Major League Baseball team on Saturday.

This time it should stick.

The Pittsburgh Pirates took the 2011 Erwin graduate in the 23rd round (705th overall) pick.

Brown is a senior outfielder who batted .321 this past season for the Catamounts and stole 45 career bases.

The Colorado Rockies originally drafted Brown out of high school five years ago, but he never signed a professional contract. The Rockies are the parent club of the Single-A Asheville Tourists.

Brown is one of the greatest multi-sport athletes to ever suit up for Erwin. He was the 2010 Citizen-Times All-WNC Football Player of the Year and held the Western North Carolina single-season record for touchdown responsibility (55) until it was broken last fall by Reynolds’ Rico Dowdle (63).

Polk County alum Joel Booker was taken one round earlier than Brown on Saturday by the Chicago White Sox.

He is believed to be the Wolverines’ first-ever MLB draft pick. Booker batted .370 this past season to garner All-Big Ten Conference honors at Iowa University.

The outfielder graduated from Polk County in 2012.

North Buncombe alum Alex Destino just wrapped up his sophomore season for the South Carolina baseball team.

There is no rest for the weary when you are an elite college baseball player.

And Alex Destino certainly classifies as that — the 2014 North Buncombe graduate led South Carolina in RBIs (59) and home runs (10) this past season as a sophomore. He will be eligible for the 2017 major league draft.

The Gamecocks’ season came to an end Sunday in Game 2 of their Super Regional with Oklahoma State with a 3-1 loss in Columbia, S.C.

Destino won’t be inactive for long.

He has been selected to play this summer in the Cape Cod League for the Wareham (Mass.) Gatemen whose season began over the weekend. Destino is listed on the team’s roster as an infielder, outfielder and pitcher.

Destino was a two-time Citizen-Times All-WNC Player of the Year at North Buncombe (2013 and 2014).

'The people who want to be here will be here'

Asheville High will have two TV games next football season on WMYA-40.

Asheville High will have two TV games next football season on WMYA-40.

HENDERSONVILLE – Paul Whitaker was asked his opinion and formulated one pretty quick.

The West Henderson football coach wants the Falcons’ season opener – Aug. 19 at home against Hendersonville – to be televised live. Even if it does come with potential drawbacks that many Western North Carolina schools are having to weigh as local station WMYA-TV (40) expands its number of broadcasts.

The sister station of WLOS will show 10 games this coming season (up from four a year ago), all on Thursday nights with a 7 p.m. kickoff.

After the Hendersonville-West Henderson tilt, those games are Asheville at Pisgah (Sept. 1), Robbinsville at Christ School (Sept. 8), Cherokee at Smoky Mountain (Sept. 15), North Buncombe at Enka (Sept. 22), Brevard at Tuscola (Sept. 29), Polk County at Mitchell (Oct. 6), East Henderson at Franklin (Oct. 20), Roberson at Reynolds (Oct. 27) and Asheville at Erwin (Nov. 3).

“Our kids are excited about this,” Whitaker said.

“It’s a chance for our program to get some really good exposure. The only problem in my mind is that we won’t be back in school yet. So we’re really going to have to push hard to get the word out that we’re on TV against one of our big county rivals. I think it’ll be a good thing and I hope we fill the stands.”

The NCHSAA did not allow live TV coverage of regular-season football games until the 2015 season. And the state association has still not bent on Friday night broadcasts. That is why every WNC game is on Thursdays.

WLOS/WMYA general manager Jack Connors said the response was so positive to televised games last fall that it made sense to go to 10 games this season.

Home schools are paid a $500 broadcast fee and there will be a $3,500 scholarship given to a boys or girls athlete at every Bojangles’ Thursday Night Rivals game.

Asheville-Erwin has been a hot ticket in recent years since the two have traditionally played in the final week of the regular season with conference-championship stakes. That may be the case again on Nov. 3, but Warriors athletic director/football coach Mike Sexton said he was still willing to grant TV access.

“It’s a big gate every year because it’s a big game,”

“In my opinion, it just makes a special game even more special. I don’t think the fact that it’s on TV will affect the crowd (size) much. The people who want to be here will be here. And another plus is that some fans who physically can’t be here will get a chance to watch the game.”

The Oct. 14 game between Pisgah and Tuscola in Canton is obviously one that was on WYMA’s radar. The annual matchup between the Haywood County rivals annually draws crowds in excess of 10,000 to 12,000.

Moving the game to a Thursday was just impossible, logistically-speaking, Black Bears athletic director David Pressley said.

“We’re excited that we got chosen for the Asheville game (on Sept. 1),” Pressley said.

“We talked to a lot of people who have had positive experiences with this. (Pisgah-Tuscola) was talked about, but there is just no way. Too much goes into that week. There is no way it could ever happen.”

Austin Baumgarner and the Smoky Mountain boys will have a new basketball coach for next season.

SYLVA- Smoky Mountain stuck with what it knew in hiring its next boys basketball coach.

Longtime assistant and athletic director Adam Phillips was announced by Jackson County Schools on Monday.

“He spent 10 years as (former coach) Jimmy Cleaveland’s assistant, so Adam has learned from the best,” Smoky Mountain Principal Jacob Buchanan said.

“Adam has earned the respect of our players, our parents and the community.”

As Buchanan said, Phillips has been part of the best-ever decade for the Mustangs program. They won seven of the past eight WNCAC or Appalachian Athletic Conference championships under Cleaveland, who resigned last week with a 243-38 record.

Cleaveland was named the Co-Western North Carolina Athletic Conference Coach of the Year this past season after the Mustangs (25-4) won a piece of the regular-season championship and the WNCAC tournament. It was their seventh regular-season conference championship in the past eight years.

Cleaveland’s 2009-2010, 2013-14 and 2014-15 teams reached the 2-A Western Regional championship game.

Cleaveland remains the last coach to lead an area team to a NCHSAA boys basketball championship (Pisgah’s 2-A run back in 2005).

Work on Owen turf begins

Owen is expected to have a new artificial turf field ready in time for the 2016 season.

Owen is expected to have a new artificial turf field ready in time for the 2016 season.

SWANNANOA – Say goodbye to the playing surface which gave rise to Western North Carolina’s all-time leading rusher.

Workers with Austin (Tex.) Hellas Construction began ripping up the artificial turf at Owen on Monday.

Their field-replacement is expected to be done well before the first official day of practice for all NCHSAA football teams (Aug. 1).

“They were tearing down one half and we practiced on the other,” Warhorses football coach Nathan Padgett said.

“We broke it down one last time inside the ‘O’ and it was a little emotional. We are going to replace the O with a horse shoe and I think every one of our kids is ready to embrace the changes.”

Former Owen back Jager Gardner rushed for 6,955 yards and was the 2014 Citizen-Times All-WNC Player of the Year as a senior. He is a rising sophomore at Temple University.

Hellas is best known as the company which installed the turf at the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium. Hellas has been looking to expand its operations to the east coast which is partly the reason why Erwin and Owen are getting its services.

Erwin’s field is only lacking about seven to nine days to its competition. Hellas is waiting for gray-colored carpet with red lettering to arrive. That turf will be planted in each end zone.

In the meantime, Hellas is starting on its next project commissioned by Buncombe County Schools.
