Roberson senior Matt Sharpstene and Christ School junior Carson Ownbey were part of the team that brought home the Carolinas-Virginia Junior Vinny Giles trophy on Sunday.

The Carolinas beat Virgina, 8.5 to 7.5. The interstate golf competition was held Saturday at Sunday at Wallace’s River Landing Country Club.

Sharpstene (West Virginia) and Ownbey (Charlotte) have both committed to play Division I college golf. They teamed up Saturday to win their foursome match over Connor Johnson and Drew Brockwell of Virginia, 2 & 1.

The WNC golfers each lost their singles matches on Sunday.

More from the Carolinas Golf Association:

The Carolinas junior boys team knew their overnight one point lead was not safe and grinded out four wins on Sunday to win back the Vinny Giles trophy winning the 34th Carolinas-Virginias Junior Matches 8.5 to 7.5 over the Virginias junior team.  Walter Brinker of Sanford, NC got the ball rolling in the right direction winning the first match of the morning seven and five over Rob Witherspoon of Richmond, VA.  Fulton Smith of Pinehurst, NC followed up in the second match securing a point for the Carolinas as he defeated Dylan Taylor of Glen Allen VA four and 2.  Team leader Grant Powell of Colfax, NC secured his point winning three and two over Connor Johnson, Jr. of Richmond, VA.

The matches then turned dicey for the Carolinas as Levi Moody of Greenville, SC lost to Teddy Zinsner of Alexandria, VA three and two.  Virginias then won another point as Mason Williams of Bridgeport, WV defeated Carson Ownbey of Candler, NC four and two.  Ryan Marter of Columbia, SC struggled all day on Saturday and did not win a point until Sunday when he secured his match and the the team victory for the Carolinas winning 1up over Drew Brockwell of Chesterfield, VA on the 18th hole by holing a pressure filled 3 foot putt with a putter he borrowed Saturday night from team mate Matthew Sharpstene.  Sharpstene lost a close match two and one to Connor Burgess of Lynchburg, VA and Zack Gordon of Gaffney, SC went the distance, but lost 1 down to Kurtis Grant of Herndon, VA.

Carolinas now leads the overall matches 18-14-1 with the matches returning to Boonesboro CC in Lynchburg, VA in 2017.

North Buncombe senior and Clemson recruit Callista Rice competed in a similar event last month. She and the Carolinas team defeated Virginia/Maryland in the Mid-Atlantic Girls Challenge, 6 1/2 to 5 1/2, in Williamsburg, Va.
