SWANNANOA – Owen alum David Weaver has signed on for his seventh year of professional basketball, this time in Japan.
Weaver, 28, will be a center for the Shiga Lakestars.
The 2005 Warhorses graduate and 6-foot-11 post player has previously been part of pro teams in Germany, Greece, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal and the Ukraine. Weaver averaged 17 points and 7.5 rebounds a game last season for Turkey’s Afyon.
“Having the opportunity to continue playing this game, no matter where it is, is such a blessing,” Weaver said Wednesday.
“Not many guys get the chance to play professionally for one year, let alone at a high level for seven years. It’s incredible.”
Weaver, his wife and their 1-year-old son have made a home in Arden.
“I’m really more focused than I’ve ever been,” Weaver said.
“I have some extra motivation with my family. The days are limited sometimes, but I want to do as much as I can for them. A lot of people would say you’re in your athletic prime from 28 to 29, so for me to be coming off my best season (as a pro) is pretty much right on point. I would have loved to have it earlier, but I feel blessed.”
Looking back on his high school career, Weaver garnered All-Western Highlands Conference honors as a senior by averaging 16.7 points and 10.3 rebounds a game for the Warhorses. Weaver was then a four-year letter-winner at Wake Forest University as a power forward/center and appeared in 121 college games.
He graduated from the ACC college in 2010.
Weaver has previously bounced around the Greensboro and Winston-Salem area before setting up a residence in southern Buncombe County.
“I’m back here in the mountains,” Weaver said.
“I want to show my family what it was like to grow up here.”
