Birdies were springing up everywhere Wednesday for Matt Sharpstene.
The Roberson senior carded eight of them for a second round score of 66, allowing Sharpstene to rise all the way to second place in the Dogwood Junior State Championship.
The final round of the three-day tournament is Thursday at the Cabarrus Country Club in Concord. Sharpstene (139) is only one shot back of Pinehurst’s Fulton Smith (138). Christ School junior Carson Ownbey (147) is tied for 13th.
On the girls side, Asheville School sophomore Rachel Kuehn (150) is only three shots behind the leader. North Buncombe senior Callista Rice (159) is tied for ninth.
