Madison senior Skyler Cantrell has signed to run college cross country and track for Mars Hill.
MARSHALL – Madison County is no stranger to snow.
Skyler Cantrell was still getting in workouts last winter, even when there was a foot of white stuff on the ground, Madison coach Jonathan Lanier said.
Cantrell signed to run cross country and track for Mars Hill during a ceremony attended by family and friends Monday morning in the Patriots’ media center.
“It’s pretty awesome. Not a lot of people get to do something like this,” Cantrell said.
“Hopefully, I can help (Mars Hill) continue their tradition. That’s what I want to do.”
Cantrell’s personal-best times have all decreased this spring due to his work ethic. His best performance in the 1,600-meter run is 4 minutes, 55 seconds and he has run 10:45 for the 3,200.
Cantrell grew up with baseball as his first sporting love, so the future is unknown but intriguing as a full-time college distance runner.
“It was a hard decision (to give baseball), but it worked out for the best,” Cantrell said.
