Coach Dan Heath and the Erwin girls soccer team qualified for the NCHSAA playoffs for the first time in more than two decades this spring.
Buncombe County Schools confirmed Thursday that Erwin soccer coach Dan Heath will not have his contract renewed as a teacher or coach for next school year.
Heath’s firing stems from an incident that occurred last month while he was serving as an interim physical-education teacher at Erwin Middle. At the time, Heath was placed on paid administrative leave which is standard protocol for BCS.
BCS did not specify what was involved in the incident, but after an internal investigation, no criminal charges are anticipated.
Heath has been the boys and girls coach at Erwin for the past two years.
His 10-11-1 girls team was one of the best Cinderella stories in mountain soccer this past season, qualifying for the state playoffs for the first time in more than two decades.
