The North Buncombe 14 and under softball team won a Babe Ruth state championship on Monday and is now looking to raise funds for a trip to the regional tournament.
North Buncombe beat Henderson County in the state-championship game and outscored opponents, 51-6, in Clemmons.
Players on the state-championship team were Katie Pack, Emilee Robinson, Nakaila Marler, Addison Edmonds, Laurun Barnes, Elisabeth Rice, Hope Barlow, Cassie Plemmons, Gabby Bean, Zaria Chandler and Gracie Vetas. Rylee McDaris, Lacey Duinkerken, Hannah Stevenson and Summer Moore have also played with North Buncombe this summer.
The coaches are Luke Plemmons, Chuck Vetas and Ronnie Marler.
The Babe Ruth Southeast Regional tournament begins July 12 in Richmond, Va., and will include teams from North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia, Florida and the Bahamas.
North Buncombe has set up a GoFundMe page (https://www.gofundme.com/nbsoftball) and is trying to raise $10,000 to help the team get to regionals.
