WEAVERVILLE – Puncture one of his veins and Darryl Fox has no doubt what will spill out.
“I’m from North Buncombe. My wife is from North Buncombe and I’ve had two kids go here,” Fox said.
“I bleed black and white if you know what I mean.”
The Black Hawks announced Friday that Fox is their new baseball coach.
Fox, 51, is a 1983 graduate of the Mountain Athletic Conference school and had been one of its assistant coaches the past seven years. He has also coached baseball and softball in the North Buncombe youth league.
Fox replaces Matt Landreth who resigned last month after going 41-34 in three seasons. Landreth left to pursue a career opportunity in Greer, S.C.
The Black Hawks were 11-12 overall last spring and the second-place team in the MAC 3-A division behind Reynolds with a 5-7 conference record.
“We’ve got a good bunch of young boys coming back and I’m really looking forward to the opportunity,” Fox said.
“I wasn’t in a position to take the job when (former coach Wesley King resigned in 2013). But I’ve taken care of some things the past couple of years and I’m in a different situation now. This is where I grew up. I’m really trying to give back to this school and this program as much as I can. It’s not a stepping stone to anything else for me.”
North Buncombe is the second MAC program to hire a new baseball coach this offseason. Pisgah alum Caleb Harbin was introduced as Erwin’s new coach in July.
