With family in mind, Kirkpatrick chooses Crusaders

Carolina Day’s Spencer Kirkpatrick shakes hands with coach Trip Cogburn during the Wildcats’ Senior Night ceremony on Jan. 29. Kirkpatrick has committed to play college basketball for North Greenville (S.C.).

ASHEVILLE – When Spencer Kirkpatrick decided to close his college recruiting process and commit to North Greenville (S.C.), he knew he had made the right decision for himself and his family.

“Staying close to home played a lot into my decision. (Family) have driven me to all these tournaments and all these camps,” Kirkpatrick said.

“They have done a lot to get me where I am and if I went to a school in Florida or a long distance away, they wouldn’t even have the chance to see me play and I wouldn’t be able to get home for holidays and things like that.”

Kirkpatrick is a 6-foot-7 forward who averaged 10.7 points and 6.0 rebounds per game for the Wildcats (22-6) last basketball season.

He had formal offers from a pair of Division II schools, Mars Hill and North Greenville. Catawba was in the process of making an offer when he committed to the Crusaders.

Kirkpatrick also had offers from Division III schools in Virginia and Tennessee.

“It was a really long process. I had a lot of really good schools that offered me or had really strong interest in me at both the Division II and Division III level,” Kirkpatrick said. “After I had taken my visits to all the schools, I just really felt like North Greenville was the best fit for me athletically and academically.”

When it came down to it, the players and coaching staff really sold him on the school, according to Kirkpatrick.

Carolina Day coach Trip Cogburn said he thought Kirkpatrick really developed a relationship with the coaching staff at North Greenville very quickly. Kirkpatrick felt like he fit in with the players there as far as the type of people they are, Cogburn added.

Former North Buncombe standout Daniel Burchette, who was the 2015 Citizen-Times All-WNC Player of the Year, is a guard for the Crusaders. Burchette was named the Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year back in March.

“I really liked the coaching staff and the players. It’s a really good Christian school and its got very good academics. Those were the big turning points for me and why I liked it a lot,” Kirkpatrick said.

The coaching staff at North Greenville showed a lot of interest in Kirkpatrick early on in his recruiting process and showed him that he was high on their priority list.

“They have stayed in touch with me and were very persistent in recruiting me which I liked a lot. They didn’t’ want to offer me until I was completely interested in the school which is a big deal to me because they don’t just offer people just to offer them,” Kirkpatrick said.

It was more of a personal connection rather than like a business decision.”

Cogburn is happy with Kirkpatrick’s choice.

“He has a chance to play early and often there because he’s a true post which is a type of player that has been kind of a dying breed,” Cogburn said. “He’s a post and he knows he’s a post. He’s willing to do the dirty work inside and I think North Greenville is really excited about that and that’s something they really need. I think that you always want to go to a place that you’re wanted and North Greenville really wanted him.”

“I think he is excited about the level of play. I think he wanted to play at the highest level he could so to get a chance to play at the Division II level was important to him.”

Being able to continue his basketball career at the collegiate level is what Kirkpatrick said he is most excited about.

“Playing basketball is what I am looking forward to the most. I’m really excited about the next four years and getting to play in that tough conference with really good competition and good teams. I’m really looking forward to playing the next four years,” Kirkpatrick said.

Kirkpatrick has battled through a lot and worked extremely hard to be able to have the opportunity to play collegiate basketball, his mother, Beverly, said.

“It has been a long time goal and he has had many obstacles to overcome. We are very proud of his accomplishments,” she said.

McGee making his name known

Reynolds junior James McGee.

Reynolds junior James McGee.

REYNOLDS – Student-athletes are at the high school level for four years, and for Reynolds junior James McGee, this last year has been one of increased performance.

McGee currently has a personal best time of 10.90 seconds in the 100-meter dash and 22.10 for the 200.

With those times McGee has qualified for next week’s 3-A Western Regional track meet, hosted by the Rockets.

He won both the 100 and 200 at Tuesday’s Mountain Athletic Conference meet.

McGee has been working with the Rockets coaching staff, which has included time in the weight room this year.

“He’s really come a long way,” said Reynolds coach David Honea. “Unlike most of the sprinters, he never played football.”

Honea said McGee never participated in organized weight training until this fall and that it bumped him up a level. He’s also able to keep his form and technique a lot better in the second half of races, especially the 200.

“He’s really managing that much better this year,” Honea said. “He really pulls away in the second half of that race.”

It’s that opportunity to run at full power that drew McGee to the sprint events.

“I get to come out with all the power I can,” McGee said. “I don’t have the stamina for long-running events, so I like doing the sprints.”

Despite the 200 meters coming toward the end of the meet, McGee prefers that to the 100.

“The 200 meters stood out to me more,” McGee said. “It’s just a little longer period than the 100 and I get to boost my speed up a little more at the end. I also like the beginning.”

With track meets lasting all-day, the preference for that race can be a benefit.

“That’s a key thing. Sprinters often have a lot of things to do in the meet,” Honea said. “You need speed. You need somebody that understands this can be an all-day affair.”

McGee has already met one of his goals by making it to the regional meet. His other goal is to make it to the state meet and do his best.

Youth, experience a good mix for Murphy baseball

Murphy's baseball team clinched the Smoky Mountain Conference championship on Tuesday.

Murphy’s baseball team clinched the Smoky Mountain Conference championship on Tuesday.

Murphy baseball coach Adam Clonts has a bunch of underclassmen playing big roles this season.

Luckily, he has a large group of seniors to help show the way.

“The seniors, knowing what to do and being on-the-field coaches, have helped the younger guys understand how the varsity game is played compared to what they were used to in middle school and junior varsity,” Clonts said. “They’ve helped a lot with that.”

The mix of inexperience and experience has helped the Bulldogs to its first Smoky Mountain conference title since 2011. The team is 14-1 in conference play heading into Thursday’s conference finale.

The Bulldogs clinched the title with a 10-1 home win against Cherokee on Tuesday.

“It was kind of like a regular win. There wasn’t too much excitement,” Clonts said.

Last year the Bulldogs finished second in conference playing, losing two games by one run each to the eventual champions and there was only one senior last year.

This group had, and still has, high expectations.

“This year we set our goals that anything less than a conference championship and third-round run in the playoffs would be a lost season, in a way,” Clonts said. “We have the same team as last year and that’s how far we made it.”

Three seniors — catcher Alex Pinkleton (.262 with two doubles), center fielder Anthony Connors (.316 with seven doubles) and second baseman Hayden Hughes (.316 with 15 RBIs) — have been starters all year. Joe Coker (3-1 record with two shutouts) and Harrison Duncan (2-1 with two complete games) pitch and Matthew Lovingood (.412 in 34 at-bats) has moved into the designated hitter role.

Sophomores Joey Curry and Royce Peterson are tied for the team lead in hits (31) and average (.449) and are in the third and fourth spots in the order, respectively. Curry, the shortstop whose brother is the starting catcher at the University of Georgia, has 12 doubles and a team-high 24 RBIs. Peterson starts at third base and has 21 RBIs and two triples.

The team isn’t winning on power, as the Bulldogs, who are 16-6 overall, have just three homers. They make good contact, though, and the team has a .327 overall average. They have more combined walks (76) and hit by pitches (29) than strikeouts (103).
Even though nine players will graduate this spring, Clonts is happy about the sophomores coming from the junior varsity team and has high hopes for the future.

“If everyone returns and plays hard and is ready to learn and listen like these seniors have,” he said, “I feel like we can be just as good or better next year and the year after. We’ll have two good years with some talented players.”

Best season yet for Brevard's McNeill

$

Brevard senior Makayla McNeill.

Brevard senior Makayla McNeill.

BREVARD – Makayla McNeill has taken a simplistic approach to hitting this season, and quite simply, it has paid off.

“I stopped thinking,” she said.

The Brevard senior second baseman’s method has produced her best hitting season in four with the Blue Devils.

She leads them with a .500 average and leads the Western North Carolina Athletic Conference in RBIs with 34.

“Instead of approaching the plate thinking that I’ve got to get a hit right now,” she said, “I’m letting my body do what I’ve taught it to do for so many years.”

McNeill has been frustrated at times during her career as she could hit homers in practice, but needed to produce much more power in games.

That changed this season as she has hit nine homers, which his a single-season school record.

“Since I’ve relaxed my body in the batters box it has allowed me to see the ball better,” she said.

On Thursday, McNeill said her national letter of intent to play at Brevard College.

When she began to look for a college she wasn’t sure she’d play softball.

“My plan all along was to pick the school I wanted to go to and then try to walk on,” she said. “I didn’t want my decision to be influenced by softball.”

Brevard College began to recruit her this season and McNeill thought about playing nearby. She is the second player on her team to sign a scholarship this season, as pitcher Casey Gilbert has signed with Walters State Community College in Morristown, Tenn.

“I just thought it was the right decision,” McNeill said. “A lot of people don’t think about going to Brevard since it is our home school. When I began to look at the school I saw how nice it really was and I like Coach (Bob) Lowe. I just felt it was the right choice.”

Her plan is to live at home, which is less than two miles from the campus, and gives her more time with her family. The close-knit bunch all enjoy softball and her father, David, has coached her at Brevard High.

The two talk about softball at home, but, she said, know how to separate the sport and family time.

“It’s been a really cool experience,” said McNeill, who has hit eight doubles and a triple this season. “Not a lot of people get to play for their fathers at this level. We usually all start out playing for our dads when we are younger. It’s been really cool to form a bond with him over softball. It’s something we both enjoy and it has brought us closer.”

McNeill’s big offensive numbers may be because of how she’d hit at the plate but she knows her teammates are a big part of it, too.

Gilbert (.412 average with 26 runs) and Callie Green (.375 average with 26 runs) are the first and second hitters in the order and are typically on base when McNeill comes up at No. 3. The clean-up hitter, Brooke Nanney, is hitting .429 and makes it so opponents don’t pitch around McNeill.

“She’s a clutch hitter,” David McNeill said of his daughter. “When she has someone in scoring position she understands how important it is to get those runs. You have to give credit to the others who bat in front of her. They are on base a lot and that enables her to drive them in. It all ties together.”

Coach McNeill said he is happy his daughter plans to stay nearby and he’ll continue to coach the Blue Devils while he sees as many Brevard College games as possible.

He’s watched his daughter improve over her four years with the team.

“She’s developed so much over the last four years as an infielder,” he said. “She’s gotten better fundamentally and her confidence has built. At the plate, she’s always been a strong hitter, but this year she has broken out and had an exceptional year at the plate.”

NCISAA lifts playoff ban on Blues

Asheville School and Christ School school met last Halloween in the final regular-season game for both football teams.

Asheville School and Christ School school met last Halloween in the final regular-season game for both football teams.

Asheville School’s football team will be eligible for next season’s state playoffs after all.

The Blues recently won their appeal to the NCISAA — the state association had levied a $750 fine and barred them from the 2016 playoffs back in November.

The punishment stemmed from Asheville School forfeiting a first-round Division II playoff game at Christ School on Nov. 6. At the time, the Blues cited a concern over the depth of their roster. The Greenies had won the regular-season finale for both longtime rivals the week before, 48-20.

After giving the case more consideration, the NCISAA said it has determined that next season’s Asheville School team should not be penalized for what occurred in 2015.
