Hendersonville's Mills signs

Hendersonville's Kelton Mills has signed to play college golf for Alcorn State.

Hendersonville’s Kelton Mills has signed to play college golf for Alcorn State.

Hendersonville senior Kelton Mills locked in his commitment to play college golf Monday morning.

And that is exactly what was required to make it happen — commitment.

“Kelton decided this is something he wanted to do, and he put the time in,” Bearcats coach Jason Weaver said.

“He would stay after practice working with me as long as I could stay.”

Mills has signed with Alcorn State in Lorman, Miss.

The reigning Henderson County champion was an All-Western Highlands Conference golfer this spring who maintained a stroke average of 80. His best 18-hole round was 74.

“I’m excited and very honored to play college golf,” Mills said.

“Not a lot of people get this chance. This is a day that has probably changed my life. I like the campus a whole lot. Everyone that I met down there was very friendly and kind.”

The Bearcats play most of their practice rounds and matches at Hendersonville Country Club. Outside of that, Mills polished his game at Crooked Creek Golf Course.

“His short game has always been really good,” Weaver said.

“Kelton has good hands. His long irons are something we talked about a lot and something that really came around for him.”

The only downside to playing college golf is that Mills will have to give up his other sporting love, basketball.

“I’m definitely going to miss it,” Mills said. “It was heartbreaking to play my last game.”

Roberson junior Camille Long.

Roberson junior Camille Long.

This past season’s Citizen-Times All-WNC Girls Swimmer of the Year is one of the clinicians for the May 21 “Improve Your Racing” clinic at Skyland’s Zeugner Center.

Roberson junior Camille Long was also the most valuable performer of the Buncombe County and Mountain Athletic Conference meets. She swam the area’s fastest-reported time in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.10) and had the second-best performance in the 500-yard freestyle (5:01.45).

Long and some of her YMCA national teammates will be instructing swimmers on all aspects of racing. All participants must know how to swim and should bring goggles, a swim suit and towel. Caps will be provided.

The clinic will have two hour-long sessions (1 p.m. to 2 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.) and the cost is $20 per session. All proceeds benefit Roberson’s booster club (the Rams Club). Registration will be limited to 36 swimmers per session.

For more information or to register, contact Long at (828) 606-1891.

Asheville Christian Academy’s Jordan Shepherd has signed to play college basketball for Oklahoma.

Asheville Christian Academy senior Jordan Shepherd has signed to play college basketball for Oklahoma.

Shepherd earned NCISAA 2-A all-state and All-Carolinas Athletic Association recognition after averaging 19.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 2.1 steals per game for the Lions. He was the 2015 CAA Player of the Year.

“I am officially an Oklahoma Sooner. Glory be to the highest,” Shepherd tweeted out Monday.

The 6-foot-3 guard committed to James Madison back in January, but a coaching change re-opened his recruiting.

ASHEVILLE – Getting too caught up in the future of Asheville High tennis would diminish what is going on in the present.

Cougars players won doubles and placed second in singles Saturday at the 3-A Western Regional tournament in Hickory.

The team of sophomore Meade Olson and freshman Henry Kelso defeated North Buncombe’s duo of Holden Ballard and Destin Newfont in the finals, 7-5, 7-5. Freshman Zach Theodossiou took a set from the defending 3-A regional singles champion before losing to Forestview’s Charlie Schuls, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3.

“I was so happy for our guys, especially after losing in the first round (of the NCHSAA 3-A dual playoffs to Weddington, 7-2, last Tuesday),” Asheville coach Sarge Luke said.

Kelso understands the place he has been put in.

“It’s really exciting, especially as a freshman,” Kelso said.

“We originally came into regionals as a third seed, and from what I was told, that was decided by the coaches. I felt like no one had ever really seen me (or Olson) play before. So that feels good to win a tournament like this.”

Former Asheville coach Sarge Luke turned over many of his duties to Sandi Theodossiou, but is currently the helm of the program as Sandi Theossiou has traveled outside the country.

Brevard swept the singles and doubles championships in Saturday’s conclusion to the two-day 2-A Western Regional tennis tournament at Gardner-Webb University.

Joseph Schrader beat Ryan Reid of Newton-Conover in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, for his third consecutive regional championship in singles. Schrader (13-0) is a junior and former two-time Citizen-Times All-WNC Player of the Year.

The Blue Devils’ doubles team of Cameron Wilson and Liam Baer downed Daniel Crutcher and Luke Laney of Maiden, 6-1, 7-6, in Saturday’s doubles final.

Brevard is coached by Mike Vandegrift and travels to Salisbury for Tuesday’s second round of the NCHSAA dual team playoffs.

Schrader is 13-0 and coming off his third consecutive regional championship in singles.

“I’m so ready,” Schrader said.

“It’s been a nonstop thought since last year. Our team is really playing well and we’re really clicking right now. We’re all fired-up and ready for what’s to come. We’re going to try and get it done this time.”

Asheville Christian Academy senior Jordan Shepherd has signed to play college basketball for Oklahoma.

Asheville Christian Academy Jordan Shepherd signed to play college basketball for Oklahoma on Monday and the Sooners issued this press release:

NORMAN – University of Oklahoma head men’s basketball coach Lon Kruger announced Monday the signing of 2016 guard Jordan Shepherd to a national letter of intent. Shepherd, currently a senior at Asheville Christian Academy in Asheville, N.C., will be eligible for the Sooners this fall.

Shepherd, 6-2 and 175 pounds, was honored as the 2015 Carolinas Athletic Association’s player of the year after averaging 19.2 points, 5.1 assists, 5.1 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game as a senior. He was also named to the NCISAA 2-A all-state team.

“Jordan is a terrific, young combo-guard,” Kruger said. “He’s great at scoring as well as creating for others. Most importantly, he’s excited about coming to Oklahoma and we are thrilled to welcome him to the family.”

Shepherd joins an already impressive 2016 OU signing class that includes Kristian Doolittle, Matt Freeman, Kameron McGusty and Darrion Strong.

“All players in this class have great work ethics and desires to improve,” Kruger said. “They have team-first attitudes and all love the idea of being Sooners. This group is made up of high-quality players and people.”

ACA coach Andy Ray also spoke about the All-WNC guard’s college choice.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for Jordan with a great, solid program. They have a great coaching staff,” Ray said.

“He’s handled (recruiting) a lot like how he plays. Jordan is so steady, patient and confident. He really dug in and tried to make a good decision and I think he did.”
