Soule swimming for the next level

Roberson senior Mary-O Soule

ASHEVILLE – Mary-O Soule’s summer swim tour has included college visits and successful meets.

Last week she competed in the Speedo Junior National Long Course Championships in Minneapolis, Minn.

Soule, a senior at Roberson who swims for the Asheville Swim Club, finished ninth in her two best events — the 200-meter butterfly and 400-meter individual medley.

“It went pretty well,” said Soule this past week as she traveled to another campus visit.

“It’s a very competitive level, so I was just happy to be able to compete and hang with all of the girls there.”

She made an Olympic qualifying time in the 400-meter individual medley with a time of 4:53.54. Soule traveled to Minneapolis with Asheville Swim Club teammate Abby Kriegler, who competed in the 800-meter and 1,500-meter freestyle.

Earlier in the year Soule, who won the NCHSAA 4-A champion in the 100-yard butterfly with an All-American consideration time of 55.73 seconds as a sophomore, stopped swimming for her prep team to focus on work with her club team.

“I definitely loved all of the time I spent on high school swimming but, at the end of the day, there wasn’t enough time for both,” she said. “It was difficult to manage school and a lot of swimming.”

When she stopped swimming for the Rams, Soule had the area’s fastest times in four individual events — the 100-yard butterfly (58.03), 200-yard freestyle (1:55.00), 200-yard individual medley (2:10.76) and 500-yard freestyle (5:13.71).

Over the summer there have been days when practices have run close to five hours. Soule admits that won’t happen during the school year but she’ll still practice for two-and-a-half hours a day.

“I’m challenged at my club level,” she said. “It’s not like college, because college will be harder, but it does prepare you for college.”

All of this practice, along with her immense talent, has helped her become a top recruit.

Her hope is that in the next two months she’ll make up her mind on her college choice.

“It has been (a little nerve-racking) but I have been really excited about it and I’ve kept everything open. I couldn’t name one place I want to go to. I have a hard time narrowing it down, that’s my problem,” she said.
The big national meets, like the one Soule competed in last week is where college coaches look at prospects.

“I’m looking at schools in the ACC, SEC, Big 10 and Pac 12; kind of all over,” Soule said. “I definitely want the big university that has big-time sports, but I also want a prestigious academic school. Swimming at a big school has always been a dream for me. I always wanted to swim in college and to make it happen has been a dream come true.”

Soule enjoyed being at a big meet at the same time the Olympics were happening in Rio. She was able to catch plenty of the swims where Americans captured gold medals.

“Every night we got to watch the Olympics and that was encouraging,” she said. “There’s so much excitement about swimming right now so that has helped.”

Cougars give Burdette first win, just barely

Makaius Brewer and Asheville High were able to come back for a 29-28 win Friday at Franklin.

Makaius Brewer and Asheville High were able to come back for a 29-28 win Friday at Franklin.

ASHEVILLE – David Burdette’s debut was a little bit of everything all rolled into one.

Devon Davidson passed for 333 yards and three touchdowns, helping Asheville High overcome a 20-point deficit in the second half. All of it went down in one of Western North Carolina football’s toughest road venues.

And even then, Burdette’s first head-coaching win hung in the balance until a short field goal from Franklin went wide with 5.2 seconds to go in a 29-28 nonconference game.

“I have no idea how we won that football game,” Burdette said.

“I have so much respect for the Franklin coaching staff and their kids. There were so many swings tonight. Our kids just found a way. Every since I took this job (in February), we’ve talked about heart. We really had to dig down for this one.”

Burdette isn’t lying. The Cougars (1-0) were down 28-8 inside the Panther Pit with 4 minutes and 36 seconds to go in the third quarter.

Corey Clement (75 yards) and Makaius Brewer (38) were on the receiving end of Davidson touchdown passes to pull Asheville within striking distance. Facing fourth down and 10, Ahmad Shivers caught a short ball in the flats, and shook everyone in his path for a 23-yard score with 5:05 to play.

Shivers had also accounted for Asheville’s first touchdown on a 3-yard carry late in the first half.

Davis Brooks was a quick thinker on the ensuing extra point – rather than try to make the best of a bad snap, he scooped up the football and threw a 2-point conversion pass to Brewer, who had four receptions for 129 yards.

“I love my team, I’d go to battle for them any day,” Brewer said.

“I’m so blessed to be around them every day. This is a good win, now we’ve got to get back to work for Newton-Conover (next week at home).”

Friday was the first look at Asheville in a spread offense, the most notable change that Burdette has made since replacing Danny Wilkins. Davidson, who is a senior, completed 19 of his 36 passes.

His counterpart at Franklin, Andrew Moore was 13-for-23 for 171 yards. Moore also scored on a 1-yard quarterback keeper. Fellow junior Brock Kloeppel had 29 carries for 123 rushing yards and two touchdowns (1 and 6 yards).

It was anybody’s game in the final three minutes.

Franklin drove deep into Asheville territory before the Cougars’ Daniel Green made an interception with 2:21 to go. Asheville fumbled the ball right back to the Panthers (0-1).

There was then a potential touchdown pass dropped in the end zone and a 25-yard field goal did not connect.

“Give Asheville credit, they made the plays when it counted,” Franklin coach Josh Brooks said.

“All you want is an opportunity to win and we gave ourselves that. Our kids fought until the end. We’re a young team and hopefully we can learn from this.”

Christ School's Keyvaun Cobb.

Christ School’s Keyvaun Cobb.

ARDEN – Was it a coincidence that the sound guy at Christ School had “Rocky Top” cued up for the second-string quarterback on Saturday?

Probably not.

Navy Shuler is a 5-foot-9, 151-pound freshman who completed the first four passes of his varsity football career, including a 31-yard touchdown strike to Jared Letman-Gash.

And then the familiar music played over Fayssoux Field’s speakers.

Shuler, the son of Swain County and University of Tennessee legend Heath Shuler, got his first game reps for the Greenies after starter Drew Johnson passed for an unofficial total of 238 yards and two touchdowns in a 42-0 blowout of Winston-Salem Atkins.

A running clock was used for some of the third quarter and all of the fourth as Christ School (1-0) dominated its home opener.

Johnson connected for scoring throws to Keyvaun Cobb (56 yards) and Landon Cooke (39). Sage Holley rushed for three short touchdowns (1, 4 and 5 yards) in his first varsity game since 2014.

The Greenies defense did not allow a first down in the first two quarters and the visiting Camels (0-1) were unable to advance past midfield until reserves started playing.

“The best thing about tonight was just seeing how all our hard work has come together,” said Johnson, a senior who threw for 2,717 yards and 26 touchdowns with nine interceptions a year ago.

“Everything starts with the line. They did a great job tonight and we have receivers who make me look good. Everything has really been going good. The best thing to me is the competition every day in practice. Everyone is pushing each other and taking care of their responsibilities.”

Christ School has been to two NCISAA championship games since 2011 under coach Mark Moroz. The goal for this season is nothing less, it’s all that and more with 19 returning starters from last year’s state runner-up team.

“It was a good opener for us,” Moroz said.

“I’m proud of what we were able to do in all three phases after only 10 days of practice. We have to pass-block better, that’s the big thing I saw tonight. We have to give (Johnson) more time back there.”

The Greenies were unable to score on their first possession Saturday, but did so on their next three. Ryan Caves made all six of his extra points, even putting a high-arcing ball on top of a school building with one of them.

Both offenses only committed one turnover. Kevin Williams recovered an Atkins’ fumble.

The competition takes a big step up next week when Christ School travels to defending NCISAA Division I champion Davidson Day (0-1). The Wildcats lost their first game in two years Friday at Erwin, 41-28.

Davidson's game one for the ages at Asheville High

Devon Davidson throws a pass on the first day of official football practice for Asheville High on Aug. 1.

Devon Davidson throws a pass on the first day of official football practice for Asheville High on Aug. 1.

Devon Davidson engineered the biggest comeback in Week 1 of Western North Carolina football.

If that wasn’t enough, the senior is only the second quarterback in Asheville High history to pass for more than 300 yards in one game.

The Cougars (1-0) beat Franklin, 29-28, with 20 unanswered points in the second half.

The official total that Davidson has been credited with from Friday’s official scorer (which is always the home team) has fluctuated between 326 and 333 yards. Either way, the performance is second only to the 344 yards that former QB Brandon Whiteside threw for in 2009 (also against Franklin).

Davidson and the Cougars are home for next Friday’s matchup with Newton-Conover (1-0).

Davidson took over as a starter for Asheville in 2015, passing for 1,632 yards and 13 touchdowns with 10 interceptions. He completed touchdown passes to three difference receivers on Friday in the Panther Pit — Ahmad Shivers, Corey Clement and Makaius Brewer.

Murphy’s Joey Curry and Kadrian McRae.

Across the board, it was a rough first week for Smoky Mountain Conference football.

Preseason favorite Murphy was able to salvage it a little Saturday at Hendersonville’s Dietz Field.

The Bulldogs scored 14 unanswered points in the final 2 minutes and 37 seconds to push past the Bearcats, 21-17.

Kadrian McRae’s second touchdown run in the season opener for both schools (a 10-yard carry) gave Murphy the lead for the first time with 1:01 to play. Joey Curry was 9-for-21 for 142 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions. Colton Posey made three receptions for 80 yards and one touchdown.

SMC teams went 1-4 in games played Friday and it wasn’t looking good Saturday for Murphy (1-0).

Demetrius Smith returned the opening kickoff of the game 91 yards for a touchdown. Alex Williford passed for 174 yards and two interceptions. His 3-yard quarterback keeper helped give Hendersonville (0-1) a 14-0 lead at the 10:08 mark of the first quarter.

Bearcats kicker Drew Eudy made a 19-yard field goal with 8:30 to go in the game.

Mountaineers adjusting well to change

Mitchell's Ben Young.

Mitchell’s Ben Young.

People sometimes forget that high school football is a numbers game, especially in Western North Carolina.

Mitchell graduated 15 seniors off of last year’s 14-2 team that won a 1-AA Western Regional championship. The Mountaineers only have 28 total players on their current roster.

Don’t pity one of three defending champs from the 2015 Western Highlands Conference championship race (Hendersonville and Mountain Heritage were the other two).

Former All-WHC quarterback Ben Young passed for 114 yards in last Friday’s 20-6 home win over West Wilkes and the much-touted junior ran for 101 more. Alex McKinney placed his hands around three receptions for 55 yards and a a touchdown. Landon Miller only rushed for 28 yards, but found the end zone twice in Ledger.

Mitchell beat Cherokee, 49-7 in 2015, but a lot has changed for both sides since then. The Braves are home for Friday’s encounter at 7:30 p.m.

“I think that (Cherokee) is much-improved,” Mountaineers coach Travise Pitman said.

“They have a great quarterback and great running back. The lines have gotten stronger. They are fundamentally-sound and make good things happen on both sides of the ball. We have to be ready. The biggest thing we are facing now is that we don’t have those veteran kids now. If you need to make adjustments, it’s not as easy.”

Leading tacklers for Mitchell in last week’s win over West Wilkes were Jacob Yelton (12), Landon Miller (nine), Trevor Self (nine), Ben Robinson (eight), Jesse Pressley (seven) and Brody Smith (six).

Other leading tacklers for the Rams were Greg Johnson (14), Jordan McNeil (12), Zack Myers (12), Dayquan Watkins (eight) and Kai Anthony (seven).

Roberson was able to leave Henderson County with a win and faces another Henderson team (East Henderson) on Friday in Skyland. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

Wells made 141 tackles (for an average of 11.8 per game) as a junior.

Tape review and a little research by the Tuscola football coaching staff has revealed that a third school record was achieved in Friday’s 68-34 home win over Patton.

Senior running back Caleb Ferguson has been credited with six touchdowns (four rushing, two receiving).

Ferguson led the Mountaineers in rushing (120 yards) and receiving (80). He was a 1,000-yard rusher each of the past two seasons and has received an invitation to January’s Blue-Grey All-American Bowl in Jacksonville, Fla.

Ferguson’s single-game touchdown record came on the same night as a school record for kick return yardage (278) from fellow senior Roman Jenkins.

The points total itself for the Mountaineers tied a third record – they had previously beaten Enka by a 68-19 score in 1974.

Tuscola (1-0) is back at Weatherby Stadium on Friday with another undefeated team, Owen (1-0), coming to town for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
