Briggs: Braves 'have a lot to prove'

Cherokee football players Jay Swimmer, Byron Locust, Kendall Driver, Dodge Crowe-Moss, Ty Mintz and Isaiah Evans.

Cherokee coach Kent Briggs has the utmost respect for Mitchell.

“They’re a well-coached team with great chemistry and kids who play unselfish. They are everything a football team should be,” Briggs said.

And for all those kind words, the Mountaineers were clearly a superior football team in 2015. They routed the Braves, 49-7, in Ledger.

Both teams are 1-0 ahead of Fridays 7:30 p.m. rematch at Cherokee.

“Last year, we felt like they dominated us,” Briggs said.

“I feel like we’re a better football team now, and I really hope it shows up Friday. We have a lot to prove. Our challenge is not to be the same kind of team that we were (in the 2015 Mitchell game).”

Isaiah Evans (159 yards, two touchdowns) and Tye Mintz (146 passing yards, 51 rushing yards and two combined touchdowns) did most of the damage for the Braves (1-0) in last week’s 50-32 win at Trinity Academy (Tenn.).

Mintz’s brother, Cade, was the team’s second-leading receiver (four receptions for 37 yards) behind Shane Swimmer (five receptions for 45 yards).

Cherokee is going for its first 2-0 start to a season since 2012.

Carnival is big start to cross country season

Carolina Day's Ralene Kwiatkowski is entered in Saturday's Western North Carolina Cross Country Carnival.

Carolina Day’s Ralene Kwiatkowski is entered in Saturday’s Western North Carolina Cross Country Carnival.

HENDERSONVILLE – Each of Andrew Devine’s runners will trample through Jackson Park’s double-loop course on Saturday.

But none of them should be exhausted to the same degree as Roberson’s boys cross country coach.

Devine has taken his place as just the third-ever race director for the 15-year-old Western North Carolina Cross Country Carnival.

Approximately 1,250 runners are expected to descend upon Henderson County this weekend, which is down from 1,416 in 2015. But at this stage, there are only so many athletes and race fans that Jackson’s grounds can handle.

The first of eight races will begin with the championship boys meet at 8:30 a.m. Admission is free for spectators.

“It’s a great time to see how your team’s fitness has grown,” Devine said.

“You just want to establish that baseline and see where you go from there. We’ve had to cap (the number of entrants) just to maintain the integrity of the races and for what the course can take, too.”

An event like this requires a lot of volunteer work.

UNC Asheville’s cross country and track teams as well as the sports medicine department from Western Carolina University have given their time for free in the past and are expected to do the same on Saturday. Combine that with efforts from Roberson’s athletic department, and the number of volunteers numbers close to 40 or more.

The complete schedule of Saturday’s races are championships boys (8:30 a.m.), championship girls (9 a.m.), invitational boys (9:30 a.m.), invitational girls (10 a.m.), individual boys (10:40 a.m.), individual girls (11:20 a.m.), 3-kilometer boys (noon) and 3-kilometer girls (12:20 p.m.).

Ceramic awards from Mud Dabbers Pottery in Balsam will be given out to the top-10 finishers in every 5-K race and the top-five runners in 3K competition.

Race fans who arrive after the start of the first race are asked to use the back entrance to Jackson Park (accessible off the Upward Road exit on I-26).

McDowell football players Ishman Martino, Tyler Banks and Isaiah Burch.

McDowell lost three fumbles, had two passes picked off and a punt blocked in Friday’s first football game under new coach Andy Morgan.

Yet for all those miscues, the season opener in Marion will go down as a win.

R-S Central has reported an ineligible player to NCHSAA, which means the Hilltoppers’ 41-21 road victory does not stand. It is now a forfeit in the favor of the Titans (1-0).

McDowell travels to Avery County (0-1) this week for a 7:30 p.m. game in Newland.

The Roberson volleyball team huddles up during Tuesday’s practice in Skyland.

SKYLAND – Team chemistry is one of those organic things in athletics that cannot be taught.

It either grows or it doesn’t.

The growth process happens to be going really well with Roberson volleyball.

Neely Carter, Nicole Quesinberry, Camryn Jansen, Katrin Madden and Gracie McCurry are seniors for a 3-0 team that hasn’t lost a set so far this season.

And the Rams have challenged themselves with matches against defending Western Highlands Conference champion Polk County and Hendersonville, the winningest program in NCHSAA history with 12 state titles.

Tennessee recruit Emma Binns is the focal point of a talented junior class that also includes Sophia Fantauzzi and Abby Krueger.

“It’s been an exciting start to the season, and it’s been fun for us to play good teams,” Roberson coach Michelle Wagaman said.

“I feel pretty fortunate. I have a great group of girls that either play club volleyball or are involved in other sports in the offseason. They have worked hard at perfecting their volleyball craft and have the parents to back them.”

Wagaman is in her sixth year as coach. The Rams were 20-4 last season and advanced to the third round of the NCHSAA 4-A playoffs.

Statistical leaders for Roberson in its latest match (a 3-0 sweep of Madison on Aug. 16) were Binns (6 aces), Madelynn Bankard three aces, nine assists, Carter (six kills), Madden (six kills and five digs), Fantauzzi (nine assists), Payton Murray (six digs) and McCurry (six digs).

Quesinberry is a middle blocker/right-side hitter for the defending Mountain Athletic Conference 4-A champions.

“We have a great group of girls,” she said.

“This is my second year on varsity, but we’ve got some juniors who have been with us since their freshman year. We’ve been able to develop relationships during that time and it definitely helps.”

The Rams play a nonconference match Thursday at Owen and the team’s first confereence contest is Sept. 1 at home against McDowell.
