Franklin returns to form in Murphy blowout

Brock Kloeppel has been the primary offensive weapon for the Franklin football team so far this season.

Brock Kloeppel has been the primary offensive weapon for the Franklin football team so far this season.

Franklin has an extra week to savor its first win, and the Panthers will gladly take it.

Friday was a return to form for the three-time Western North Carolina Athletic Conference champions who are the preseason favorite for a fourth title.

Brock Kloeppel carried the football 27 times for 192 yards and two touchdowns in a easy 42-7 road victory at Murphy.

Grant Stiles, A.J. Carpenter and Tyler Harrison added touchdown runs of their own and Edgar Chavez connected on a 29-yard field goal just before halftime. The Panthers (1-1) scored on six of their first seven possessions, didn’t commit a turnover and the Franklin defense held the Bulldogs (1-1) to seven first downs.

The Panthers needed a good showing to get a bad taste out of their mouths — Franklin let a 20-point lead slip away in the second half of a 29-28 home loss to Asheville High in Week 1.

“We challenged our kids to build on the good things we did (in the Asheville game) and learn from the bad,” Panthers coach Josh Brooks said.

“The preparation started that Saturday morning afterwards. The whole attitude was about getting things fixed and we had a great week of practice. Following such a tough loss, this was a big deal for us. I’m just proud of our kids for not sitting around and sulking.

So far, Kloeppel has been a workhorse for Franklin with 59 carries for 321 yards and five touchdowns. Stiles has complemented him with 127 yards and one touchdown.

The team lead in tackles is 4.5 per game and shared by four different players — Grant Vanhook, Ethan McCall, Dillon Daves and Byron Shields.

The Panthers are idle this week, meaning their next game is Sept. 9 at Swain County.

Former Asheville American Legion Post 70 and Owen baseball coach J.D. Hinson has been selected to the Roy Hobbs Baseball hall of fame.

Hinson is the only North Carolina representative in an 11-man class which will be inducted Nov. 13. A site has not been determined for the ceremony.

Roy Hobbs Baseball is an adult recreational organization and affiliated with the AAU. Only individuals who have been involved with the organization for 10 or more years are eligible for the hall of fame.

Hinson coached the Asheville Legion team from 2000 to 2013. He led Owen to a 249-127 record with 12 conference championships and three regional titles (1990, 1991 and 1994) in 16 years. Owen reached the 2-A state semifinals in 1998.

In addition to baseball, Hinson has also also been a basketball, football, golf, softball or volleyball coach at either Owen or Asheville’s Eliada Academy. Hinson even did some regional scouting for three different Major League Baseball organizations, off and on, between 1978 and 2010.

He is presently involved with the Southern Athletics showcase organization and has been an assistant baseball coach at Carolina Day in recent seasons.

Completion percentage high once again for Greenies QB

Christ School senior Drew Johnson (2).

Christ School senior Drew Johnson (2).

Christ School senior Drew Johnson throws caution to the wind when he throws the football.

The second-year starter for the Greenies has connected on 53 of his 70 attempts (for a 75.7 completion percentage) through two games. With that kind of accuracy and his sheer production (572 yards and six touchdowns with three interceptions), Johnson could be headed for back-to-back 2,000-yard seasons.

The 6-foot, 170-pound Spartanburg, S.C., resident leads all area quarterbacks in yardage at the moment and racked up 2,717 yards with a 61 percentage completion rate as a junior.

Johnson’s most-targeted receivers so far have been Keyvaun Cobb (14 receptions for 139 yards), Jared Letman-Gash (13 receptions for 142 yards and five touchdowns), Tyler Redmond (seven receptions for 98 yards), Kokayi Cobb (seven receptions for 52 yards), Gabe Blevins (six receptions for 61 yards) and Kevin Snyder (six receptions for 52 yards).

The defense has been bouyed by Seth Griswold (6.0 tackles per game), Carson Jones (5.0), Redmond (5.0) and Blevins (4.0).

Christ School (1-1) travels to Heathwood Hall (1-1) on Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff in Columbia, S.C.

2-0 Titans brace for Tuscola

Tuscola senior Caleb Ferguson (1) has scored 11 touchdowns in two games for the Mountaineers (2-0).

Tuscola senior Caleb Ferguson (1) has scored 11 touchdowns in two games for the Mountaineers (2-0).

No one can stick an asterisk on the end of this one.

First-year coach Andy Morgan and McDowell got their first true between-the-lines win on Friday.

Ben Ballew passed for a career-high 160 yards and two touchdowns as the Titans (2-0) overcame a nine-point halftime deficit to fight past Avery County, 22-17, in Newland.

Chase Justice accounted for 108 of Ballew’s yards and a 52-yard touchdown catch. Matthew Moss caught the second TD (7 yards) at the 11:23 mark of the fourth quarter. McDowell was able to hang on from there, even after trailing by nine points at halftime.

The Titans are off to just their fourth 2-0 start to a football season since 2000. Their 41-21 home loss to R-S Central later became a forfeit win when the Hilltoppers self-reported an ineligible player to the NCHSAA.

“All the mistakes we made in the R-S game were fixable,” Morgan said.

“Being down nine and for them to hang in there, it says a lot about our kids. They were well-prepared by our staff who made some good adjustments. I think Avery had about 50 yards of offense in the second half and we had close to 200. To finally see all the hard work coming together is huge for the players and coaches.”

Similarly, McDowell went on the road last year to win at Tuscola, 35-20, and the two play again Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Marion. It is one of only two Western North Carolina games scheduled for Friday between a pair of undefeated teams – East Rutherford (2-0) at Roberson (2-0) is the other.

“(Tuscola) is impressive on both sides of the ball,” Morgan said.

“They really have some good-looking kids everywhere who execute that offense (the Double Wing) well. In our meetings, I compared them to some of the former South Point teams that I’ve seen. They’re not running the veer as much as South Point did, but they roll off the ball with really good linemen and their fullback is very comparable.

Tuscola senior Caleb Ferguson has scored 11 touchdowns in two games for a Mountaineers offense which has produced 117 points.

'Humble' is the keyword for Heritage football

Mountain Heritage is home for Friday’s nonconference football game against North Buncombe.

Everything is a lot more delectable when you are on top.

Mountain Heritage football players chowed down on stomach-stretching portions of eggs and bacon Saturday morning at a well-known Yancey County restaurant.

If longtime coach Joey Robinson had his druthers, some humble pie would have been on the menu for the team breakfast, too.

The Cougars and Justin Keener are the new No. 1 in the Citizen-Times Best of the West football rankings after Friday’s 58-31 win over the previous team (Erwin) to hold that designation.

No one knows for sure, according to Robinson. But Keener, who is a senior, either set or tied a school record with a half-dozen rushing touchdowns.

Junior quarterback Trey Robinson probably winced a few times, but otherwise played through an ankle injury. He ran for 168 yards and threw for 121 more, allowing Mountain Heritage to make a 44-7 halftime lead stand. Junior Denton (110 yards) was the third Cougars player to rush for more than 100 yards in West Asheville.

Michael Austin made a 9-yard touchdown catch and an interception.

The Cougars have to balance all the newfound fame this Friday when they take on North Buncombe (0-2) at 7:30 p.m. in Burnsville. They are 2-0 for only the third time since 2000.

“What I’ve learned is that if you don’t treat every week the same as the last, you will be as down this week as you were up the week before,” Joey Robinson said.

“The first thing we have gotta do is recover from Friday, that was a very physical game and our kids exerted a lot of energy. We’ve gotta get our legs back and get back to the fundamentals. (North Buncombe) is a rival, a well-coached team, and we’re going to get their best shot. They’re hungry for a win and nothing would make their season like beating us. It’s nice to come back home and the key for us all season long is going to be staying healthy, but we need to stay focused, too.”

Erwin's Ferguson passes for 6,000th yard

Erwin quarterback Damien Ferguson passed for his 6,000th career yard in Friday's home loss to Mountain Heritage.

Erwin quarterback Damien Ferguson passed for his 6,000th career yard in Friday’s home loss to Mountain Heritage.

Even in defeat, Erwin senior Damien Ferguson stepped into some hallowed ground last Friday.

Ferguson (522 yards and seven touchdowns with three interceptions) is believed to be only the second-ever Buncombe County quarterback to pass for more than 6,000 career yards.

Ferguson (6,112 yards) is a three-year starter and two-time Citizen-Times All-WNC selection. He has depended mostly on the hands of Trey Martin (14 receptions for 180 yards and two touchdowns), Kealin Goode (12 receptions for 133 yards and three touchdowns), C.J. Thompson (eight receptions for 81 yards and two touchdowns) and Isaiah Poore (five receptions for 53 yards) this season.

Poore (114 yards, two touchdowns) and Quentin Smith (84 yards, one touchdown) have fueled the Erwin rushing attack. Chris McDonald (7.5 tackles per game), Simeon Thompson (6.0), Kendell Dover (5.5) and Jackson Gouge (5.0) have been the most active defenders for the Warriors.

Last week’s 58-31 home loss to Mountain Heritage was the most lopsided defeat at the hands of a local team for Erwin since 2009.

The Warriors travels to Ooltewah, Tenn., for Friday’s 7:30 p.m. nonconference game.

Ooltewah is an eastern Tennessee school about 200 miles away that beat the Warriors, 48-7, in 2015. Ooltewah is coached by Mac Bryan, who went 4-7 in his only season at Enka (2009) before resigning.

Bears, Cougars next up for live TV

Asheville High and Pisgah renewed their nonconference series in 2015. The Cougars won last year's game at home, 27-9.

Asheville High and Pisgah renewed their nonconference series in 2015. The Cougars won last year’s game at home, 27-9.

Canton is ready for its close-up.

Over the years, Pisgah and Tanner Wike (221 passing yards, 149 rushing yards and seven combined touchdowns) have played to crowds in excess of 10,000.

But there has never been an audience the size of the one Thursday – the undefeated Black Bears (2-0) are home for a live TV game against Asheville High (1-1).

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

For those who cannot make it to Haywood County or would rather watch from the convenience of their home, WMYA-TV (40) will carry all the action.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for not only our football program, but our school,” Pisgah coach Brett Chappell said.

“It’s a chance to showcase our school, our town and the environment our kids get a chance to play in. And then you get to the football game itself, and it is one that we are definitely going to try and win.”

The 2015 game between Asheville and Pisgah (a 27-9 home win for the Cougars) was their first in 15 years.

With Wike running the show as a sophomore, the Black Bears are 2-0 for the third time in four years. Wike’s receiving corps includes Trey Morgan (eight receptions for 208 yards and three touchdowns), Jason Fabio (three receptions for 27 yards and one touchdown) and Isaiah Fisher (two receptions for 19 yards.

University of Alabama recruit Michael Parrott has rushed for a team-high 260 yards to go along with two touchdowns and Fisher has added 125 yards and one touchdown.

Leading tacklers for Pisgah are Tanner Lanning (9.5 a game), Jeff Albritton (8.0), Trey Morgan (5.5), Houston Rogers (7.0) and Josh Wilson (4.5).

“It’s a typical Asheville team,” Chappell said of Friday’s opponent.

“But the thing that makes them scary is (the spread offense) that they’re running. Now they have an opportunity to get their athletes out in open space and that’s a concern for anybody. As for us, we got better from Week 1 to Week 2. We had a few turnovers (in a 33-7 home win over North Buncombe on Aug. 19) and we’ve cleaned those up. The big thing is we have got to continue to progress. If we stay where we’re at, we’re not going to win some of our (future) games.”

Friday is the first of two TV games for Asheville High and first-year coach David Burdette. Their Nov. 3 regular-season finale at Erwin will also be broadcast by WMYA.

Asheville High graduate Crezdon Butler appeared in nine games for the Detroit Lions last year.

Former Asheville High standout Crezdon Butler was waived by the Detroit Lions on Monday.

Butler appeared in nine games for the NFL team in 2015 and had three tackles. He memorably broke up a two-point conversion pass to give the Lions an 18-16 win over the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field.

The 2006 Cougars graduate has played with seven different NFL teams since Pittsburgh took him in the fifth round of the 2010 NFL draft. He has 24 career tackles and two forced fumbles.

Butler was the 2005 Citizen-Times All-WNC Player of the Year and led the Cougars to a perfect 15-0 season and NCHSAA 3-A championship that fall. It was the first state football title for Asheville since 1922.

He played collegiately for Clemson where Butler made 166 tackles, 11 interceptions and two sacks.

Haynes still building her legacy at Asheville

Asheville High senior Adrienne Haynes

Asheville High senior Adrienne Haynes

ASHEVILLE – Asheville High senior Adrienne Haynes has learned not to let one bad point or negative game blow up into something more.

After all, tennis players can be their harshest critics.

That maturity out of the two-time defending NCHSAA 3-A singles champion is a very unfortunate development for her opponents. After all, Haynes has always had shot-making ability in spades – she came into Tuesday’s Mountain Athletic Conference match against Enka with a 63-2 career record in high school play.

Haynes is quite possibly the best girls tennis player in Buncombe County history.

She has never lost a regular-season singles match in four years at Asheville and will be favored in November to become the Cougars’ first-ever three-time state singles champion, girls or boys.

“I think my mental game has gotten a lot better since last year,” Haynes said.

“And way better than two years ago. It’s helped, I wasn’t where I am now (in the past.). I’m really excited about this upcoming year. I’m a team captain so that’s new, and I think we’re going to have a good team.”

Haynes was deemed the Citizen-Times All-WNC Player of the Year for a third time as a junior. She was 18-0 in singles and 4-0 in doubles.

Classes began Monday for Asheville City Schools. And the Cougars won their first match Thursday, edging Reynolds, 5-4. Haynes breezed through her singles match in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-0.

Haynes has not yet made a college commitment, but has four official recruiting visits lined up.

“I’m just going to try and enjoy my senior year,” she said. “I know it’s going to be over before you know it and I’m going to miss it.”

New coach Mike Clifford was hired just this month to coach Asheville tennis. He has been involved in the sport for more than two decades and played competitively in USTA leagues for 20 years.

“There’s no doubt that Adrienne is a very impressive player,” Clifford said.

“School is just getting going so it’s a little hard to tell what kind of team we are going to have. I know we certainly have some strong players and I expect a lot of them to have winning records. The thing that impresses me is we were down 4-3 in the Reynolds match and found a way to come back and win. I think that says a lot.”

Rockets looking for more of same in rivalry game

Sean Jones (6) rushes for a touchdown in last year's 49-7 win at Owen.

Sean Jones (6) rushes for a touchdown in last year’s 49-7 win at Owen.

Everything is greener in an environmentally-conscious world, isn’t it?

The all-time count in the Owen-Reynolds rivalry isn’t that off-kilter, with Reynolds holding a 36-25 advantage.

But the Rockets and Alex Flinn (176 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions) won have 10 of the last 11 games, and all but one of those victories (a 28-19 game in 2007) have come by double digits.

Reynolds is back home Friday for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff from Dalton Stadium.

“It’s a rivalry game, so you know that Owen is going to be prepared and play hard,” Rockets coach Shane Laws said.

“It expect both teams to play well. It’s a game that means something for both communities.”

Reynolds is winless ahead of Friday’s eastern Buncombe County grudge match against the Warhorses (1-1), but let’s keep things in perspective. The Rockets have fallen short against a couple 2-0 teams that are both state-ranked – West Forsyth (4-A) and three-time defending state champ Shelby (2-A).

Reynolds was only behind 14-7 at halftime of last Friday’s 35-14 home loss to Shelby thanks to a touchdown pass from Nathan St. Onge (135 rushing yards, 61 passing yards and two combined touchdowns) to leading tackler Frank Torres (11.5 per game). Featured back Sean Jones (78 yards) did not play due to an illness, but has returned to practice this week. The senior is probable for Friday.

“We knew going in that it was going to be a process with this team, and it was going to be a team that developed with time,” Laws said.

“We felt like this team could potentially be a good team and we will do. Part of the process through is dealing with and playing through the mistakes. We feel like we improved from the West Forsyth game last week, and that’s what we wanted to see.”
