Madison, Rhodarmer looking for more success

Madison won last week at North Buncombe, 26-16.

Madison won last week at North Buncombe, 26-16.

Look closely, the blue on Madison’s uniforms extends to the collar.

Razzle dazzle is less important to Ben Rhodarmer than work ethic, and the first-year coach sees unmistakable signs of it on a daily basis.

“This is a really hard-working group,” Rhodarmer said.

“This whole community is that way, and that’s the kind of kids we have. They are blue collar, and they have bought into the work aspect of what we’re trying to accomplish. It’s been really good so far.”

The Patriots (1-1) lost to West Henderson on a last-second field goal Aug. 19, but reclaimed the Juice Jug with last week’s 26-16 victory at North Buncombe. The rivalry game was tied 7-7 at halftime until Colby Edwards (211 passing yards, 119 rushing yards and four combined touchdowns) broke away.

“I was extremely excited with that win,” Rhodarmer said.

“Our kid never quit, we got down and they bounced back and kept their energy high.”

Derek Gonzalez (332 yards, two touchdowns) and Elan Littrell (10 receptions for 130 yards) have been other offensive leaders for the Patriots, while the defense has been shored up by Keegan Foley (14 tackles per game), Clark Gray (9.5), Austin Shelton (9.0), Logan Roberts (8.5), Dakota Surrett (8.0) and Devin Nash (7.5).

Madison travels to Rosman (0-1) on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

“We’ve watched them on film and they play hard and are very physical just like Rosman teams always are,” Rhodarmer said.

“I know they’re young, but they still play hard and do what they do well.”

Devon Davidson (3) and Asheville High travel to Pisgah on Thursday.

CANTON – Mill Town, are you ready for your close-up?

Fourth-year Pisgah football coach Brett Chappell is the one who coined a nickname for one of the most industrially-strong communities still left in Western North Carolina.

And it has stuck in Haywood County.

Over time, attracting a large and wide-ranging audience has never been a problem for the Black Bears. Sophomore quarterback Tanner Wike (221 passing yards, 149 rushing yards and seven combined touchdowns) and players like him have hit the gridiron in front of crowds that numbered anywhere between 10,000 to 12,000.

But there has never been a fanbase like the potential one Thursday – undefeated Pisgah (2-0) is home for a live TV game against Asheville High (1-1).

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

For those who cannot make it to Haywood or would rather watch from the convenience of their home, WMYA-TV (40) will carry all the action.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for not only our football program, but our school,” Chappell said.

“It’s a chance to showcase our school, our town and the environment our kids get a chance to play in. And then you get to the football game itself, and it is one that we are definitely going to try and win.”

The 2015 game between Asheville and Pisgah (a 27-9 home win for the Cougars) was their first in 15 years.

With Wike running the show as a sophomore, the Black Bears are 2-0 for the third time in four years. Wike’s receiving corps includes Trey Morgan (eight receptions for 208 yards and three touchdowns), Jason Fabio (three receptions for 27 yards and one touchdown) and Isaiah Fisher (two receptions for 19 yards.

University of Alabama recruit Michael Parrott has rushed for a team-high 260 yards to go along with two touchdowns and Fisher has added 125 yards and one touchdown. Leading tacklers for Pisgah are Tanner Lanning (9.5 a game), Jeff Albritton (8.0), Morgan (5.5), Houston Rogers (7.0) and Josh Wilson (4.5).

So far, the Black Bears have outscored a couple other Buncombe County opponents (Enka and North Buncombe) by a combined total of 69-14.

“It’s a typical Asheville team,” Chappell said of Thursday’s opponent.

“But the thing that makes them scary is (the spreaud offense) that they’re running. Now they have an opportunity to get their athletes out in open space and that’s a concern for anybody. As for us, we got better from Week 1 to Week 2. We had a few turnovers (in a 33-7 home win over North Buncombe on Aug. 19) and we’ve cleaned those up. The big thing is we have got to continue to progress. If we stay where we’re at, we’re not going to win some of our (future) games.”

Friday is the first of two TV games for Asheville High and first-year coach David Burdette. Their Nov. 3 regular-season finale at Erwin will also be broadcast by WMYA.

“Every one of Brett’s kids play hard,” Burdette said.

“You always know when you’re playing Pisgah, that they’re going to be tough. They are aggressive on defense. I think the thing with Brett is that he is kind of curious to see how good they are and how they stack up (after two blowout wins). It’s going to be a great atmosphere. They have a proud tradition at Pisgah and we know they are going to play hard. For us, the opponent doesn’t matter so much as we just keep trying to move forward. We need to take care of business on our end.”

Devon Davidson (495 yards and four touchdowns with one interception) is flourishing this season in the Cougars’ new spread offense with the help of Makaius Brewer (15 receptions for 202 yards and two touchdowns), Dana Campbell (six receptions for 76 yards) and DeAndre Gaskin (six receptions for 72 yards).

Ahmad Shivers (194 yards, three touchdowns) heads up the Asheville rushing attack.

Leading tacklers for one of the year-to-year favorites in the Mountain Athletic Conference are Tequandre Bates (12.5 a game), Taevon Edgerton (11.0), Brewer (9.5), Kaejon Griffin (9.0), Micah Robertson (9.0), Andrew Leota (8.5), Daniel Green (8.0) and Campbell (7.5).

Weather cancels Christ School football game

Christ School’s Seth Griswold.

Friday’s football game between Christ School and Heathwood Hall (S.C.) has been cancelled due to concerns over tropical storm conditions forecast for the Columbia, S.C. area.

The game will not be made up.

There is a 100 percent chance for rain, according to The Weather Channel and three to five inches are expected to fall in Columbia.

Greenies senior Drew Johnson (572 yards and six touchdowns with three interceptions) leads all Western North Carolina quarterbacks in passing with a receiving corps that includes Keyvaun Cobb (14 receptions for 139 yards), Jared Letman-Gash (13 receptions for 142 yards and five touchdowns), Tyler Redmond (seven receptions for 98 yards), Kokayi Cobb (seven receptions for 52 yards), Gabe Blevins (six receptions for 61 yards) and Kevin Snyder (six receptions for 52 yards).

Christ School is 1-1 after last week’s 49-21 loss at Davidson Day. Leading tacklers for the Greenies are Seth Griswold (6.0 tackles per game), Carson Jones (5.0), Redmond (5.0) and Blevins (4.0).

McDowell-Tuscola preview

Caleb Ferguson and Tuscola lost 35-20 at home to McDowell in 2015. The same two teams play Friday in Marion.

Caleb Ferguson and Tuscola lost 35-20 at home to McDowell in 2015. The same two teams play Friday in Marion.

MARION – Caleb Ferguson will camp out in your end zone, no stakes or tent necessary.

How to quantify what the 5-foot-11, 175-pound senior from Tuscola has done through two games?

Here’s how.

As an individual, Ferguson’s 11 touchdowns (nine rushing, two receiving) are more than 21 entire teams in mountain football.

Ferguson and the Mountaineers have scored a Western North Carolina-best 117 points in two games and bring their Double-wing offense to the Titans’ doorstep on Friday.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

“(Tuscola) is impressive on both sides of the ball,” McDowell coach Andy Morgan said.

“They really have some good-looking kids everywhere who execute that offense well. In our meetings, I compared them to some of the former South Point teams that I’ve seen. They’re not running the veer as much as South Point did, but they roll off the ball with really good linemen and their fullback is very comparable.

Those are some kind words for Ferguson and he’s worthy of them.

Ferguson has rushed for 290 yards and gets his handoffs from first-year starting quarterback Grayson Perkins (83 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions). Leading tackler Joe Napert (9.0 per game) gets behind the line of scrimmage a lot – the senior has made eight stops for a loss. Other key tacklers are John Medford (7.5), Taylor Austin (7.5), Jeremy Jacobs (7.0), Dylan Worley (7.0), Ferguson (7.0) and Bailee Ewart (6.5).

“The biggest thing for us is the defense really improved from Week 1 to Week 2,” Tuscola coach Tommy Pursley said.

“The defense has made some big strides. We have some things we need to clean up on offense, too. We got stopped a couple times (in last week’s 49-14 home win over Owen). We had three big penalties and they scooped up a fumble and returned it for a touchdown. We’ve got to improve our focus, but I’m confident that all of it is stuff we can fix.”

Morgan embarked on his coaching career back in 1998. He was at McDowell for five years before also serving as an assistant at Roberson from 2005 to 2014.

Last Friday’s 22-17 win at Avery County was the first true between-the-lines win for Morgan and the Titans. They were outclassed in a 41-21 loss to R-S Central on Aug. 19 in Marion. The result of the game was later overturned after the Hilltoppers self-reported an ineligible player to the NCHSAA.

Ben Ballew passed for a career-high 160 yards and two touchdowns as the Titans overcame a nine-point halftime deficit last Friday in Newland.

Chase Justice accounted for 108 of Ballew’s yards and a 52-yard touchdown catch. Matthew Moss caught the second TD (7 yards) at the 11:23 mark of the fourth quarter. McDowell was able to hang on from there, even after trailing by nine points at halftime. The Titans are off to just their fourth 2-0 start to a football season since 2000.

Damon McNeely (9.5 tackles per game), Kaali Tobe (8.5) and Tyler Banks (6.0) are names to know on defense.

“Coach Morgan is I’m sure going to do a great job at McDowell. Any time there is a coaching change, you see some new enthusiasm,” Pursley said.

“We expect to see a very good football team Friday. We’re going to have a real battle on our hands.”
