Line play huge for undefeated Heritage

Quarterback Trey Robinson (15) is the top rusher for a Mountain Heritage offense averaging 363.3 yards per game.

Quarterback Trey Robinson (15) is the top rusher for a Mountain Heritage offense averaging 363.3 yards per game.

Wanna average 363.3 rushing yards per game like Mountain Heritage?

Hit the weight room.

Strength gains made over the winter, spring and summer are paying off now for offensive linemen Austen Rocha, Devan Woody, J.T. Isham, Keaton Hall, Zeb Virnelson and tight end Michael Austin.

The Cougars are 3-0 in for only the sixth time in school history with all that blocking freeing up Trey Robinson (401 passing yards, 362 rushing yards and eight combined touchdowns), Junior Denton (305 yards, three touchdowns), Justin Keener (192 yards, eight touchdowns) and Cole Burleson (129 yards, three touchdowns).

Mountain Heritage is home for Friday’s 7:30 p.m. nonconference football game against Rosman (0-2).

The Cougars are a top-10 team in NCHSAA 2-A polls from both The Associated Press (No. 5) and NCPreps.com (No. 9).

Seven different Mountain Heritage players have caught a pass from Robinson this season, a group fronted by Burleson (six receptions for 129 yards and two touchdowns) and Alston Randolph (four receptions for 108 yards and one touchdown).

Double-digit tacklers for the Western Highlands Conference preseason favorite are Adam Shuford (13.7 a game), Dathan Robinson (11.7) and Corey Presnell (11.0). Dawson Branton (9.7) and Seth Randolph (9.0) are not far off.

Black Hawks defensive coordinator deals with health scare

Roger Harris, shown here coaching Asheville School football, has decided to sit out this season as a North Buncombe assistant coach.

Roger Harris, shown here coaching Asheville School football, has decided to sit out this season as a North Buncombe assistant coach.

North Buncombe defensive coordinator Roger Harris is sitting out the rest of this football season to address his health.

Harris said Wednesday that he has been hospitalized, at times in intensive care, since last week’s 62-13 loss at Mountain Heritage.

Harris, 53, is dealing with a blood infection among other issues.

Harris has previously been the head baseball, boys basketball and football coach at Asheville School.

He compiled an 11-14 record in three years of private-school football. The 2011 Blues team still lays claim to the best postseason run in school history as a state runner-up. Not only that, Asheville School has not beaten its most bitter rival, Christ School, in football since Harris was coach.

The Black Hawks (0-3) are home for Friday’s 7:30 p.m. nonconference game against West Henderson (1-1).

Brevard-Madison preview

Derek Gonzalez and Madison travel to Brevard on Friday.

Derek Gonzalez and Madison travel to Brevard on Friday.

BREVARD – Craig Pritchett has big-time cause for his concern.

When the Brevard coach puts on game tape of Madison, he sees a team bouncing around with just as much confidence and enthusiasm as his own.

Two of the early surprises in Western North Carolina football will be on the same field Friday in Transylvania County.

Kickoff between the undefeated Blue Devils (2-0) and Patriots (2-1) is set for 7:30 p.m.

“Both of us have got a good thing going,” Pritchett said.

“You look at us, and we do similar things on offense and run the same defense (a 3-5). We’re almost mirror images of each other.”

Indeed, and here is another thing that Brevard and Madison share in common – they have already won as many games as they did in 2015.

Pritchett and the Blue Devils are off to their best start in nine years, stirring up memories of better days for one of the mountains’ all-time winningest programs. The second-year coach inherited a program that has won 14 conference championships and a state title (1983) in the past 40 years.

On the flip side, Brevard also endured its first-ever winless seasons in 2012 and 2014.

So far, Tanner Ellenberger (223 passing yards, 96 rushing yards and seven combined touchdowns) has lived up to his billing as a two-time WNC Athletic Conference preseason player of the year.

Fellow senior Tanner Pettit (235 yards, two touchdowns) rushed for 189 yards and scored twice in the Blue Devils’ last game – a 41-7 drubbing of Rosman on Aug. 26.

Brevard is one of three undefeated teams left in the WNCAC (Pisgah and Tuscola are the two others) but has not tasted victory at home since 2013.

How long ago was that? The Blue Devils had natural grass then – they installed an artificial turf field in 2014.

Ellenberger has thrown the majority of his passes to Ari Williams (six receptions for 131 yards and two touchdowns) and Lane Pressley (five receptions for 73 yards and two touchdowns). Ethan Shook averages 15.0 tackles per game for the defense, followed by Estevian Benjamin (8.5), Pettit (8.0) and Kyle Williams (8.0).

Madison and Colby Edwards (431 passing yards, 231 rushing yards and eight combined touchdowns) have already equaled their wins total from not only last year, but 2014 as well. Edwards threw for 220 yards and ran for 112 more last Friday.

Derek Gonzalez (443 yards, four touchdowns) continues to be the top rusher in the Western Highlands Conference. Elan Littrell has made seven receptions for 164 yards, while the defense has relied on Logan Roberts (9.7 tackles per game), Clark Gray (9.0), Austin Shelton (8.3) and Matthew Wallace (7.7).

“(Brevard) is very similar to us,” Patriots coach Ben Rhodarmer said.

“To me, it looks like they are back to the Brevard of old. Their kids are playing really hard. It’s a big challenge for us this week. I hope our kids play hard and we can correct some of those mistakes that we’ve made so far.”

MADISON AT BREVARD

Kickoff: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Pick: Brevard by 7.

Following is a look at the last five football games between Brevard and Madison:

2015: Brevard 36, Madison 20.

2005: Brevard 41, Madison 19.

2004: Brevard 63, Madison 8.

2003: Brevard 40, Madison 0.

2002: Brevard 46, Madison 6.

Selfless Cobb carries Greenies to TV win

Christ School's Kokayi Cobb (3) looks to evade a tackle from Robbinsville's A.J. Ornelas on Thursday night in Arden.

Christ School’s Kokayi Cobb (3) looks to evade a tackle from Robbinsville’s A.J. Ornelas on Thursday night in Arden.

ARDEN – Kokayi Cobb has plenty of awards and accolades including a preseason all-state selection as a running back for Christ School.

He lived up to those expectations on Thursday by rushing for 132 yards on five carries with two touchdowns in the Greenies’ 31-7 win over Robbinsville.

But his best work of the week came on Monday, and the effort paid off for Christ School’s defense on Thursday.

It came as a surprise. He made a sacrifice.

Cobb, the first-team running back, inserted himself into the scout-team offense. He didn’t ask coach Mike Moroz if he could do it. The senior just did it.

“It was such a shock,” Moroz said. “I’ve never seen that in all of my time in football. He was our top receiver and top running back last year, one of our best players.

“And he just went in with the scout team.”

Cobb didn’t necessarily need to practice the offensive game plan for the Black Knights (0-3). With Robbinsville’s run-dominated offense, he didn’t need to practice much at defensive back. But if he could emulate Robbinsville running back Ian Wiggins for the week, he could give his defensive teammates a better understanding of what they’d face when the lights —  WMYA-TV (40) television lights, too — replaced a setting sun at Richard Fayssoux Field.

“It was something I could do to help my teammates and make them better,” Cobb said. “I thought about it a little during the day because they needed somebody who could really run on the scout team.

“I didn’t tell coach I was going to do it. I just did it.”

The unusual practices prepared the Greenies’ defense.

It limited Robbinsville to 55 rushing yards on 32 attempts including eight tackles for loss. The Greenies held Wiggins — who entered the game with a sore hamstring and exited in the third quarter with a hurt ankle — to 31 yards on 13 carries with a long of eight yards. Robbinsville finished with 197 total yards with 57 of them coming on a touchdown pass from Alex Bridges to Chandler Jumper.

“(Cobb) is one of the main reasons why our defense shut them down today,” Moroz said. “He made our defense much better this week.”

Cobb made himself better, too. He and Moroz agreed that Cobb had an awful preseason. He didn’t practice with the effort, intensity or focus necessary to improve — and certainly not up to the level a senior leader should display.

“He was running routes half-speed,” Moroz said. “Then he came out this week and did a completely selfless act.

“He went from a guy who was slacking in practice to a guy who said, ‘I got this.’”

Yet Cobb did display the ability that earned him preseason honors.

Cobb gave the Greenies (2-1) a 21-7 lead in the second quarter when he took a handoff, headed through the middle of the line, juked one defender and out-ran two others down the right sideline for a 63-yard touchdown.

“That play turned everything in our favor,” said Christ School quarterback Drew Johnson who completed 19-of-28 passes for 221 yards and a touchdown to Keyvaun Cobb. Sage Holley had a 1-yard touchdown run and Ryan Caves added a 35-yard field goal just before halftime. The Greenies led 24-7 at the break.

Cobb, the scout-team running back, again showed he’s a first-team all-state selection with a 55-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. He started to the right, but the Black Knights bottled him up. But they didn’t take him down. Cobb went left, picked up one block from Johnson, a couple other blocks from teammates then burst through two defenders for the impressive touchdown.

“I said before the game that he’d have a special night,” Moroz said. “Call it karma, call it whatever you want, but it happened for a reason.”

Not a bad night for the scout team running back.

UNC Asheville baseball coach Scott Friedholm is offering private lessons at D-BAT Asheville.

D-BAT Asheville has announced that UNC Asheville baseball coach Scott Friedholm will be offering private lessons at the facility.

Friedholm is available from Mondays through Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

More from D-BAT:

D-BAT Asheville is honored to introduce UNCA Head Coach Scott Friedholm as one of the newest and most accomplished baseball instructors on staff. Scott’s passion and love for the game has allowed for this unique opportunity for him to open his schedule up to those local players who want to learn the fundamentals from one of the very best coaches in the community!

Coach Friedholm came to Asheville from Boston College, where he spent four seasons as Recruiting Coordinator and Pitching Coach.  He worked to make the 2014 the best season for the BC staff, registering an ERA of 4.27, a four-season low.  The Eagles also tallied 352 strikeouts and a .261 opponent batting average over 489 innings.

He spent five years at the US Naval Academy in the same roles. Coach Friedholm guided the pitching staff to the highest five-year win (149), strikeout (1,757) and save (59) totals among any other five-year stretch.  He developed the first two pitchers to ever be drafted out of Navy while also mentoring 12 All-Conference selections, three Freshman All-Americans, and one All-American.  The Midshipmen won 30 games in four of the five years he was at Navy.  The program had done that just three times in the previous 110 years.

Prior to arriving in Annapolis, Coach Friedholm spent four seasons in the same capacity at the University of Maine, producing three MLB draft picks from his staff and also helping guide the Black Bears to two NCAA Tournament appearances.  His staff at Maine ranked amongst the top 25 in the country in ERA two of his four seasons. Friedholm also served as the pitching coach for two seasons at Bryant, where the Bulldogs set school records in both overall and Northeast-10 Conference wins in consecutive years.

Coach Friedholm played four seasons at Providence College as a catcher from 1995-1998.  As a freshman, he was part of the Friars squad that won 44 games and a program-record 16 Big East games that earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament.  He earned All-Big East and All-Region honors in 1996 and then as a senior, he hit .395 with 13 homeruns and school-record 66 RBI, earning All-American honors.  He signed a free agent contract with the Tampa Bay organization in June 1998.

Scott graduated from Providence in 1998 with a B.A. in History.  He and his wife, Angie, have two sons, Cooper (7) and Camden (4).

Scott is currently available for private lessons and clinics at D-BAT Asheville. His schedule is filling up fast, so book a lesson today!!

WAYNESVILLE – What’s in a name?

Oodles and oodles of yardage and points if your surname is Ferguson this football season.

Tuscola senior running back Caleb Ferguson and Erwin senior quarterback Damien Ferguson rank highly not just on a local or statewide level, but nationally in statistical leaders collected by MaxPreps.

The country’s overall leader in both touchdowns (15) and points (90) as of Friday?

He resides in Haywood County.

Caleb Ferguson has scored a school-record six, five and four touchdowns in respective wins over Patton (68-34 on Aug. 19), Owen (49-14 on Aug. 26) and McDowell (44-19 on Sept. 2). This was a bye week for the undefeated Mountaineers (3-0).

“We never go into a game thinking about (how many touchdowns an individual has),” Tuscola coach Tommy Pursley said.

“I call the offense based off what the defense is giving us. Caleb is a really good football player and taking advantage of a lot of opportunities that he has been given. But you can’t ever go into a game thinking about stats. In our offense, we have four backs (including junior quarterback Grayson Perkins) who can run the football. If you rush for 1,000 yards in this offense, then you have really done something.”

Tuscola offense is modeled after the flexbone set used by Georgia Tech. The Mountaineers are 3-0 for the first time since 2008 behind a starting offensive line comprised of Mitchell Leveritt, Cameron Parker, Joey Diienno, Austin Goforth and Will Trantham. Eli Trantham is the team’s tight end.

Leveritt is a team captain and started last year for the varsity, as did Goforth and Will Trantham.

As for the other Ferguson, Damien Ferguson was tied for the second-most touchdowns in the country (13) as of Friday, tied for third with 78 points and had accrued the fifth-most passing yards in the United States (1,212). He and the Warriors (1-2) were home for a nonconference game against Science Hill (Tenn.).

It should be noted that that MaxPreps lists, which can be viewed in their entirety here, only include schools which keep their stats through the website. MaxPreps is an official partner of the NCHSAA.

Erwin and Tuscola met in a preseason scrimmage. But the two schools are not scheduled to play one another this season unless it happens in the NCHSAA playoffs. Warriors coach Mike Sexton was previously in charge of the Mountaineers in 2005 and 2006.
