Jones, Rockets roll to rivalry win

Sean Jones (6) and Reynolds cruised to a 70-12 win over Owen on Friday night at Dalton Stadium.

Sean Jones (6) and Reynolds cruised to a 70-12 win over Owen on Friday night at Dalton Stadium.

REYNOLDS – Reynolds running back Sean Jones left his shoulder pads in the locker room at halftime.

The Rockets didn’t need him for the final 24 minutes against Owen on Friday night. Plus, he needed to continue healing after missing the previous game after a hospital stay with colitis.

Jones and the rest of the Rockets felt better than fine after cruising to a 70-12 victory over the Warhorses.

“I cried a little last week because I couldn’t play,” Jones said. “I was a little sad that I didn’t play in the second half because I wanted to score four or five more touchdowns.”

Jones, a senior, had a good night on just four carries before halftime. He gained 66 yards on five carries including a 24-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and a 25-yard score in the second quarter.

“I didn’t make it look easy,” he said. “The O-line made it look easy. I just ran through the holes.”

Even with a running clock for the entire second half — after Reynolds built a 56-6 lead at the break — the Rockets (1-2) amassed 333 rushing yards on 30 carries. They had only 11 offensive snaps in the second half.

“It feels like a piano is off our back,” Reynolds coach Shane Laws said. “Things came together tonight and they were things we struggled with in the first two games.”

Those first two games were losses to 4-A power West Forsyth and to three-time defending 2-A state champion Shelby. Those defeats seem like they happened months ago after the dominating victory on Friday.

But it wasn’t perfect.

“Oh, I know we’ll find things to improve on when we watch the video,” Laws said. “It won’t be hard. The next thing is building on this win.”

Reynolds quarterback Nathan St. Onge accounted for four touchdowns — two rushing, one passing to Charlie Lehman and another to Talon James. Jones had his two scores before the half. Keyal Talbert, Darien Caldwell and Kaedin Robinson also had rushing touchdowns. And Conor Sullivan scored six when he covered a high punt-snap in the end zone during the third quarter. Senior kicker Ethan Blakey went 10-for-10 on extra points.

Owen receiver Tyler Sexton scored in the first quarter on a 13-yard pass from Kendrick Weaver, on a 77-yard streak from Weaver, and finished with seven receptions for 166 yards.

“We talked after the game about trying to finish the game, how to keep fighting and not give up,” Owen coach Nathan Padgett said. “Sometimes you have to handle adversity and how you do that says a lot about who you are.”

Undefeated Rams run to 3rd win

Lejuan Rush and Roberson are 3-0 after Friday night’s win over East Rutherford.

Roberson's LeJuan Rush.

Roberson’s LeJuan Rush.

SKYLAND – Roberson used a heavy dose of the run game and a staunch defense to remain undefeated Friday night.

Senior running backs LeJuan Rush and Jerome Pulley, along with junior Shaq Gist, all got into the end zone in a 23-7 win over visiting East Rutherford.

Meanwhile, the defense and special teams for the Rams (3-0) gave the offense starting field position in the East Rutherford half a whopping six times during the game, including two times at the 5-yard line.

Roberson coach J.D. Dinwiddie recognized the performance of his defense as the strong point of the win Friday night.

“Our defense has played well all year, even through the preseason scrimmages. We felt like going into the season we could have a really good defense,” he said.

“We struggled at times on offense, and we’re going to; we have some young kids that don’t have a lot of offensive experience. We need to be able to play great defense, and right now we are playing great defense.”

The game started off very quickly. Roberson marched down the field on its opening possession without much resistance, the drive ending in a 4-yard plunge by Rush with 7:31 left in the first quarter.

Just two minutes later, Rams junior Seth Rowe sacked Cavaliers quarterback Cameron Simmons (who was 5-for-17 for 65 yards) on fourth down, giving Roberson the ball right back at the East Rutherford 35-yard line. Despite the great field position, Roberson could not take advantage. This was the theme of the night, as the Rams only managed three touchdowns from their great starting field position on several occasions.

With 7:11 left in the first half, a Cavaliers wide receiver got in a scuffle with one of the Rams defensive backs, throwing the defender’s helmet off and getting ejected from the game. The rest of the first half was marked only by exchanged punts and turnovers from both teams, the score remaining 7-0.

Early in the second half, the Rams flexed their defensive muscles again. On the Cavaliers’ opening drive of the half, quarterback Simmons was stripped and Rams defensive end Jordan McNeill scooped up the fumble and chugged down to the 5-yard line before being brought down.

Rams sophomore quarterback Ty Gossett (who was 9-for-21 for 109 yards and two interceptions) ended up giving the ball right back to East Rutherford on a third down interception. However, after two false start penalties, which backed the Cavaliers up to their own 1-yard line, the Roberson defensive line came up with a stop in the backfield to force a safety, putting the Rams up 9-0. Roberson received the free kick at the East Rutherford 38-yard line. A few plays later, Pulley slashed in from 11 yards to extend the lead to 16-0.

Finally sensing some urgency, the East Rutherford offense began to start humming. Out of pistol zone read looks with quarterback Simmons and running backs Fronzbee Clyburn (nine carries for 64 yards) and Demetrius Mauney, the Cavaliers quickly ran right down the field, scoring on a 1-yard sneak by Simmons. They opted for the extra point instead of trying for two to make the score 16-7 with 2:32 left in the third quarter.

Despite the great drive to end the third, the fourth quarter was not as kind to East Rutherford. They could only manage punts and turnovers on downs against the stingy Roberson defense. With 1:46 left in the game, Rams tailback Gist ran it in from seven yards out to cement the victory by a score of 23-7.

Dinwiddie saw penalties as the main factor which prevented the Rams from capitalizing on the great field position they were afforded all game.

“They were self-inflicted wounds. We talk a lot about controlling the controllables,” Dinwiddie said.

“We had some illegal procedures, and I can deal with some holding penalties every now and then, but it just seemed like (the penalties) were poorly timed,” said the Rams coach.

Next week, Roberson will travel to Morganton to face off against Freedom.

Ferguson passes for WNC record 665 yards

Erwin senior Damien Ferguson passed for a Western North Carolina-record 665 yards in Friday's 69-55 loss at Ooltewah (Tenn.).

Erwin senior Damien Ferguson passed for a Western North Carolina-record 665 yards in Friday’s 69-55 loss at Ooltewah (Tenn.).

OOLTEWAH, Tenn. – Damien Ferguson chose his words carefully Friday night.

When he had any words at all – the Erwin quarterback was just as dumbstruck by the numbers as anyone.

Ferguson knew the yards were adding up, but the senior was trying to win a football game, not set a Western North Carolina record with 665 passing yards in a 69-55 loss at Ooltewah (Tenn.).

The NCHSAA record is 667.

“It’s just blowing my mind right now. Dang!” Ferguson exclaimed.

“To do it against a team like that with a lot of potential Division I players, you’ve got to have great protection. My line deserves so much credit for their blocking. And I put the ball up there, but the receivers are the ones who make the plays.”

Ferguson attempted 84 passes Friday night and completed 50 of them in a nonconference game that lasted more than three hours. C.J. Thompson caught four of the touchdowns (15, 25, 46 and 66 yards) to finish with 364 receiving yards. Trey Martin (6 yards) and Isaiah Poole (11) accounted for the other two touchdowns.

Ferguson (1,187 yards and 13 touchdowns with four interceptions) is a three-year starter and former two-time Citizen-Times All-WNC selection who now has 6,777 career yards. The area record (7,895 yards) belongs to 2010 Tuscola graduate Tyler Brosius.

The Warriors fell to 1-2 with Friday’s loss to Ooltewah, which is about 200 miles away in east Tennessee.

“Damien would be the first to tell you that winning is the most important thing, more important than any record,” Erwin coach Mike Sexton said.

“We gave ourselves a chance at the end against a really good team and that’s what we wanted. We dressed out 31 (players) and they dressed out 90. And just to see our kids fight the way they did was very encouraging.”

Erwin is back at home next week for a game against Science Hill (Tenn.) before closing out its nonconference schedule on Sept. 16 at Franklin.

Back-to-back wins for Patriots

Madison's Colby Edwards.

Madison’s Colby Edwards.

It is barely September and Madison has already won as many football games as it did all of last year.

The same goes for 2014.

Colby Edwards passed for 220 yards and rushed for 112 more in Friday’s 44-22 win at Rosman. Edwards had a hand in four touchdowns, one more than Derek Gonzalez, who rushed for 111 yards.

Coming in Friday, the defense was taking its cues from Keegan Foley (14 tackles per game), Clark Gray (9.5), Austin Shelton (9.0), Logan Roberts (8.5), Dakota Surrett (8.0) and Devin Nash (7.5).

The Patriots (2-1) play at undefeated Brevard (2-0) next week.

First-year coach Ben Rhodarmer was hired back in April and inherited a Madison program coming off back-to-back 2-9 seasons. Both of this year’s wins have come on the road — the Patriots outlasted North Buncombe, 26-16, on Aug. 26.

“It’s definitely good for these kids to match the wins total from last year (and the year before that),” Rhodarmer said.

“Now we have something to build on and we can work on improving.”

Jets stand alone in MAC soccer

Jordi Palacios-Tomas (17) and Enka are 4-0-2 so far this soccer season.

Jordi Palacios-Tomas (17) and Enka are 4-0-2 so far this soccer season.

Most years, the Mountain Athletic Conference soccer championship goes through Asheville High, Reynolds or Roberson.

Enka is one of the teams looking to challenge that status quo. The Jets (4-0-2) and Pedro Robles (four goals) completed this week as the only undefeated team in the MAC.

Along with Robles, who is a junior, the top goal-scorers so far are senior Carlos Perez (three) and sophomore Efrain Montesinos-Vera (three), senior Jesus Sanchez (two) and juniors Cooper Trull and Junior Zuniga (two apiece). Five different Jets have given out two assists each – Perez, Trull, Sanchez, Garcia and senior Edin de Leon.

The two most-used keepers have been junior Austin Hughes (16 saves) and sophomore Jarrett Payne (12).

In all, five starters are back from last season’s 9-11-2 team for third-year coach Jason McGill.

“There’s a lot of parity this year (in the MAC) and that’s kind of exciting,” McGill said.

“It’s not just the traditional programs, you have teams like Erwin that is much-improved, and I think we can offer a little something, too.”

Enka tied Smoky Mountain and West Henderson by identical 1-1 scores last month and has since beaten Madison and Tuscola. The team’s next game is Wednesday at home against Pisgah.

Erwin (No. 9), Reynolds (No. 16), Asheville (No. 19), North Buncombe (No. 21) and Enka (No. 23) were all included in the first NCHSAA 3-A rankings, released earlier this week. Roberson was eighth in 4-A.

State records for Erwin's Thompson, Ferguson

$

Erwin senior C.J. Thompson.

Erwin senior C.J. Thompson.

It could be a while before anyone “catches” this record.

Erwin senior C.J. Thompson’s 364 receiving yards in Friday’s 69-55 loss at Ooltewah (Tenn.) is a NCHSAA record. The former single-game record was 360 yards and had stood for three years.

The following is a direct excerpt from the state association’s record book:

360, Dakwon Freeman (Currituck) vs. Hertford County, November 8, 2013 (Currituck 27-21)
357, Malcolm Vaught (West Bladen) vs. Terry Sanford, October 26, 2012 (Terry Sanford 44-20)
336, Chris Noble (North Davidson) vs. Davie, November 8, 2002 (Davie 26-24)
301, C.J. Thompson (South Mecklenburg vs. Myers Park, October 12, 2012 19 receptions in 41-33 loss)
300, Cameron Dollar (East Lincoln vs. Christ the King, August 26, 2016; 9 receptions, 7 TD in 69-0 win)
279, Reggie Williams (Greenville Rose) vs. Bertie, 2000
275, Michael Schmidt (Hendersonville) vs. Mountain Heritage on September 26, 2014

Fellow senior Damien Ferguson was 50-for-84 for 665 yards and six touchdowns with one interception in that same game. Ferguson’s attempts are a NCHSAA single-game record:

66, Connor Mitch (Wakefield) vs. Leesville Road (58-67), September 29, 2011
65, Daniel Evans (Raleigh Broughton) vs. Raleigh Millbrook, November 9, 2001 (Millbrook 24-14)
64, Luke Samples (East Wilkes) vs. East Surry, November 5, 1998 (East Surry 52-38)
62, Drew Davis (East Chapel Hill) vs. Southern Durham, October 14, 2011 (Southern 71-27)
62, Connor Mitch (Wakefield) vs. Garner, November 9, 2012 (Garner 76-34)
60, Drew Davis (East Chapel Hill) vs. Carrboro, September 9, 2011 (Carrboro 44-25)

And so are his completions:

43, Drew Davis (East Chapel Hill) vs. Carrboro on September 9, 2011 (Carrboro 44-25)
42, Drew Davis (East Chapel Hill) vs. Southern Durham, October 14, 2011 (Southern 71-27)
40, Ray Stanifer (Porter Ridge) vs. Concord on September 29, 2008 (Concord 28-24)
39, Zack Wilcox (West Bladen) vs. Terry Sanford on October 26, 2012 (Terry Sanford 44-20)
38, Connor Mitch (Wakefield) vs. Leesville Road on September 29, 2011 (Leesville 67-58)
NCHSAA STATE FOOTBALL RECORDS 12 8/30/2016
38, Chad Vick (Leesville Road) vs. Panther Creek on August 28, 2015 (Leesville Road 54-48)
37, Connor Mitch (Wakefield) vs. Broughton (70-42), October 19, 2012
37, Drew Davis (East Chapel Hill) vs. Jordan on September 16, 2011 (East Chapel Hill 62-49)
36, Dom Samson (Panther Creek) vs. Apex, October 23, 2015 (Apex 55-52)
35, Nick DeMuro (Athens Drive) vs. Fuquay-Varina on October 5, 2007 (Athens 49-21)

Ferguson’s yardage is the second-most in state history behind Wakefield’s Connor Mitch, who threw for 667 in a 2012 game.

Ingles Athlete of the Week: Sage Holley

Christ School senior Sage Holley

Christ School senior Sage Holley

Name: Sage Holley

School/Team:  Christ School / Greenies

Age/School Year:  17 / senior

Sport: Football

GPA:  3.5

Favorite subject in school and why:  My favorite subject at Christ School is history. Since history has a way of repeating itself, learning about specific events in our past is a way for me to learn from other people’s mistakes and fortunes.

Favorite athlete/sports team and why: I have two athletic role models, Ezekiel Elliot (Dallas Cowboys) and Ryan Matthews (Philadelphia Eagles). I respect their style of play and try to emulate them. They have very precise cuts and unmatched field awareness.

What is your favorite thing about playing football? I love the physicality and how the game pushes my personal limits. It is also the ultimate team sport because it requires maximum effort and a strong “team” mentality in order to achieve success.

Quote from a coach: “Sage is one of the top leaders in our school and on our team. His positive attitude and work ethic is contagious. He is an absolute beast on the field, but is a gentleman off the field. The same guy who will run opponents over on the field of play is the same kid helping a freshman tie a
bow tie for his first day of class. With a strong work ethic in the class, he epitomizes the term ‘student-athlete.’” – Coach Mark Moroz
