Ferguson tops nationally in touchdowns, scoring

Erwin senior Damien Ferguson (2).

Erwin senior Damien Ferguson (2).

For the second time this season, a Western North Carolina football player leads the country in touchdowns and overall scoring.

Erwin senior quarterback Damien Ferguson is No. 1 nationally with his 23 touchdowns and 138 points in statistical lists compiled by MaxPreps.

Ferguson has the fifth-most passing yards (1,796) among all United States quarterbacks tracked by the website. Only schools which keep their stats through MaxPreps, as the large majority in WNC do, are part of the lists.

The Warriors (2-3) rebounded from a three-game losing streak with Friday’s 57-34 win at Franklin. C.J. Thompson (41 receptions for 631 yards and 12 touchdowns) set a WNC record for single-game touchdown catches (six) in that nonconference matchup.

Erwin is back on the road for Friday’s game at Reynolds (3-2). It is the first Mountain Athletic Conference game for both teams and kicks off at 7 p.m. MAC schools voted before the season to move up the start of all their games a half-hour.

Tuscola senior running back Caleb Ferguson was previously ranked No. 1 in touchdowns and scoring by MaxPreps. He has 17 combined touchdowns (14 rushing, three receiving) for the undefeated Mountaineers (4-0).

Wiffle-ball fundraiser for Roberson baseball

Roberson's Collin Watt.

Roberson’s Collin Watt.

Baseball season may be a ways off, but Roberson already has it eyes on some needed field improvements as well as a return trip to April’s IMG National Classic tournament in Bradenton, Fla.

To help fund these endeavors, the Rams are holding a wiffle ball tournament  Oct. 29 at Holmes-Smith Field. Tournament play begins at 10 a.m., rain or shine.

There will be three competitive divisions – adult co-ed corporate for a business, church or school team ($150), family for 2-3 adults and 2-3 children per team ($125) and student for all high school and college-age players ($100). Teams may include up to five players and there will be prizes for the winning team in each bracket. Players can participate in multiple divisions, but only for two teams at most.

There is a three-game guarantee, and the format is five innings or a 30-minute time limit.

After round-robin play, there will be a single-elimination playoff for each division.

Team uniforms are encouraged, and prizes will be given for the best ones.

Admission for spectators is $3 or $5 for a family and other donations will be accepted.

Barbeque and other food options will be available as well as cornhole and inflatables for children to play on.

For more information or to register, contact Roberson coach Eric Filipek at eric@cleanasheville.com.

Enka is home for Thursday night's live TV football game against North Buncombe.

Enka is home for Thursday night’s live TV football game against North Buncombe.

NORTH BUNCOMBE (0-5) at ENKA (1-4), 7 p.m.

Last week: North Buncombe lost to Mitchell, 49-17; Enka lost to Brevard, 52-20.

Last year: North Buncombe beat Enka, 45-14.

Notes: Everyone gets a clean slate for the start of conference play. Believe that Noah Lisenbee (401 yards, five touchdowns) and North Buncombe are taking that to heart after just the program’s third 0-5 start since 1987. Lisenbee is averaging a respectable 4.7 yards per carry and has dealt with three different quarterbacks this season – Connor Davis (158 yards and no touchdowns with four interceptions) and Kaden Higgins (129 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions) split time last Friday under center. Blake Mathews (18 receptions for 199 yards and one touchdown) and Ethan Green (five receptions for 54 yards) power the receiving corps. Dakota Vosburg (6.0 tackles per game) has twice as many defensive stops (30) as the next-highest Black Hawks defender. Enka and Avery Holbrook (601 passing yards, 225 rushing yards and eight combined touchdowns) are bidding for their first home win since an August 2015 game versus Owen. Holbrook leads his team in passing and rushing, with Austin Clark (179 yards, one touchdown) and Chase Bennett (109 receiving yards, 101 rushing yards and one combined touchdown) providing ground support. Donyelle Gaines (12 receptions for 188 yards) and Seth Phillips (nine receptions for 72 yards) have also made their presence known as receivers. North Buncombe holds a 30-26-1 advantage in this all-time series. Thursday’s game will be broadcast live by WMYA-TV (40).

Pick: Enka by 1.

Roberson's Soule to swim for Tar Heels

Roberson senior Mary-O Soule has committed to swim in college for the University of North Carolina.

Roberson senior Mary-O Soule has committed to swim in college for the University of North Carolina.

SKYLAND – Lots of pools close around Labor Day.

Not in Mary-O Soule’s world.

The Roberson senior competes year-round for the Asheville Swim Club which means lots of grueling morning and afternoon workouts.

All those hours in chlorinated water have paid off — Soule has committed to the University of North Carolina.

“I’m super-excited about it and so happy that (recruiting) is over,” Soule said Tuesday.

“It just feels great to have finally made my decision. The girls on the team are incredible and the coaching staff is great. Not only do they have top-notch athletics, but the academic offerings are amazing.”

Soule is a former NCHSAA 4-A champion in the 100-yard butterfly who said she chose the Tar Heels over two other finalists, Florida and N.C. State.

Soule chose to focus exclusively on club swimming midway through last winter’s high school season. At the time, Soule had the area’s best performances in four individual events — the 100-yard butterfly (58.03 seconds), 200-yard freestyle (1:55.00), 200-yard individual medley (2:10.76) and 500-yard freestyle (5:13.71).

Cutting down to one team seems to have agreed with Soule.

She placed ninth in the 200-meter butterfly and 400-meter individual medley at August’s Speedo Junior National Long Course Championships in Minneapolis, Minn. Her performance in the latter was an Olympic qualifying time of 4:53.54. In addition, Soule won three events (the 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard butterfly and 200-yard individual medley at February’s N.C Swimming Senior Championships.

As of Wednesday, there were 47 athletes from Western North Carolina who had committed to play college sports. The first signing date for this school year is Nov. 9.

Couch leads Division III soccer in scoring

Smoky Mountain alum Jordan Couch.

Smoky Mountain alum Jordan Couch.

Smoky Mountain graduate Jordan Couch is the top scorer in NCAA Division III soccer this season.

Coach is a junior at Emory & Henry (Va.) and has 12 goals so far for the Wasps.

He received his diploma from Smoky Mountain in 2014 and was an East-West All-Star and Citizen-Times All-WNC forward as a high school senior. Couch scored 140 career goals for the Mustangs, including 50 as a senior.

More from Emory & Henry:

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry men’s soccer team jumped out to a historic start in its first five games this season, reeling off five straight victories for the best start in program history.  The Wasps now stand 5-1 overall after a 2-1 loss on the road at William Peace University. In the six games that E&H has played, the squad has scored 22 goals which match the total number of goals scored by the team in all 17 games last season.

The success of the team can certainly be attributed to the improved talent level and team cohesion under fourth-year head coach Robert Richardson. But two players, Jordan Couch (Abingdon, Va.) and Zach Quest (Charlotte, N.C.), have led the Wasps offensively and are earning national attention for the program. Couch leads all of NCAA Division III in scoring, amassing a total of 12 goals so far, including two four-goal matches. Couch scored a total of six goals during the 2015 season.

The junior, who was selected to the All-ODAC second team last season, stated “It’s both humbling and rewarding to see all the hard work that the team has put in this summer and during the preseason paying off. It’s still early in the season, and I know the team and myself still have a lot to work on to continue the early success that we’ve had thus far.”

Couch and Quest have combined for 42 points on the early season. The two only had 16 points all of last year. Furthermore, the two have two match-winners each and a combined 35 shots on goal.

ACA-Christ School soccer to play at UNCA

Asheville Christian Academy's boys soccer team won last year's NCISAA 2-A championship.

Asheville Christian Academy’s boys soccer team won last year’s NCISAA 2-A championship.

Friday night isn’t just for high school football.

Boys soccer teams from Asheville Christian Academy and Christ School have agreed to play a neutral site game for the foreseeable future at UNC Asheville, starting with Friday’s 7 p.m. matchup at Greenwood Field.

Admission is free for spectators.

Neither one of the Carolinas Athletic Association teams has a lighted home field. ACA (9-2-2, 4-0-0) will be the home team on the scoreboard Friday and the Greenies (8-4-0, 4-0-0) are the visitors. The way the arrangement works is that both sides will give up one home game a season to play on the college field and this year is ACA’s turn.

The Lions are the defending NCISAA 2-A champions.

“It was probably (Greenies coach Guy Campbell) who came up with the idea. We’re good friends and we were having lunch one day and talking about how we could make this rivalry more of a community affair,” ACA coach Terry Hughes said.

“We thought it would be nice to play at Greenwood Field and when it became available, I know I jumped on it right away.”

Rockets, Warriors set for MAC debut

Alex Flinn and Reynolds are home for Friday's Mountain Athletic Conference opener against Erwin.

Alex Flinn and Reynolds are home for Friday’s Mountain Athletic Conference opener against Erwin.

REYNOLDS – Get there early and count on staying late.

Mountain Athletic Conference schools voted before this football season to move up kickoffs a half-hour for all intraleague games.

Friday is the first night of that experiment.

However, don’t think just because Erwin (2-3) and Reynolds (3-2) are teeing it up at 7 p.m. that their game at Dalton Stadium won’t go into the wee hours of the night.

Not given past history.

The Rockets were the preseason favorite in this year’s MAC coaches poll and are home Friday for a Buncombe County rivalry game versus the team that was picked second. Both sides run the spread offense as efficiently as anyone in Buncombe which has led to some long and intense games in recent years.

“I think the biggest reason (the rivalry has grown lately) is that it’s a game you have got to win if you want a chance to win the conference,” Reynolds coach Shane Laws said.

“It’s the first conference game for both of us and that makes it unique in itself. And then you’re talking about two teams who’ve been in the hunt for a conference championship pretty consistently these past five or six years.”

Laws and the Rockets won all six of their conference games by double-digits in 2015, and have a 10-game winning streak in the MAC that dates back to 2014.

Nathan St. Onge (421 rushing yards, 297 passing yards and eight combined touchdowns) leads the defending MAC 3-A champs in two offensive categories. Other threats to break a big run are Keyal Talbert (265 yards, six touchdowns) and Sean Jones (225 yards, two touchdowns), while Rmani Lynch (13 receptions for 166 yards and two touchdowns) and Talbert (11 receptions for 158 yards) are the main outlets for St. Onge and Alex Flinn (222 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions).

Five Rockets have made 30 or more tackles – Frank Torres (65), Conor Sullivan (55), Charlie Lehman (45), Andrew McKay (32) and Chayce Plummer (30). Torres has made 11 tackles for a loss and recovered a fumble in last Friday’s 40-17 win at Hendersonville.

“(Reynolds) is very good, defensively,” Erwin coach Mike Sexton said.

“They fly to the ball and make you work for every thing that you get. Offensively, if you want to stop them, you’re going to have to make open-field tackles. They have big linemen as well as quarterbacks and tailbacks who can make you look silly. Both teams are well aware of the implications that come with this game. This one is always huge if you want to win our conference.”

Erwin’s last conference-championship season was 2012.

Getting into a shootout with this Warriors team is not well-advised.

As of this week, senior quarterback Damien Ferguson (1,796 yards and 22 touchdowns with five interceptions) ranks No. 1 nationally in touchdowns (23 total) and points scored (138) in statistical lists compiled by MaxPreps. Ferguson has the fifth-most passing yards among all United States quarterbacks tracked by the website. Only schools which keep their stats through MaxPreps, as the large majority in WNC do, are part of the lists.

Erwin rebounded from a three-game losing streak last Friday and C.J. Thompson (41 receptions for 631 yards and 12 touchdowns) set a WNC record for single-game touchdown catches (six) at Franklin.

Other key pieces of the offense are Kealin Goode (27 receptions for 304 yards and three touchdowns), Isaiah Poore (344 receiving yards, 275 rushing yards and six combined touchdowns), Trey Martin (26 receptions for 367 yards and four touchdowns) and Bryan Anuel (13 receptions for 116 yards). Defensively, Chris McDonald averages 8.6 tackles per game, followed by Ethan Lunsford (4.8), Jackson Gouge (4.8) and Simeon Thompson (4.6).

“They are very good at what they do,” Laws said of the Erwin offense.

“They can score points and put you in a touch situation real fast. We feel like we can score, too. We don’t want this to be a game where we are having to match Erwin touchdown-for-touchdown. Hopefully we will play better than them defensively and not put ourselves in that kind of situation. But it’s going to be a tall task regardless. Erwin is similar in a lot of ways to the triple-option, you just don’t see an offense like they run, as run as well as they do, every week. It makes it tough to prepare.”

Reynolds is decisively the better football program if you look at the all-time series — the Rockets lead it by a count of 40-13-1. But the two schools have split the last four meetings. They even played twice for the very first time in 2014 with each side getting a victory.

ERWIN AT REYNOLDS

Kickoff: Friday at 7 p.m.

Pick: Reynolds by 1.

Following is a look at the last five football games between Erwin and Reynolds. The Rockets lead the all-time series, 40-13-1.

2015: Reynolds 35, Erwin 18

2014: Reynolds 38, Erwin 32

2014: Erwin 27, Reynolds 24.

2013: Erwin 69, Reynolds 28.

2012: Reynolds 24, Erwin 20.
