Mustangs at home for titanic WNCAC matchup

Smoky Mountain senior Matthew Ridley (19) is the leading rusher in Western North Carolina.

Smoky Mountain senior Matthew Ridley (19) is the leading rusher in Western North Carolina.

September means there is less daylight and more on the line for every single football team.

Doesn’t Smoky Mountain and first-year coach Chris Brookshire know it.

The Mustangs (4-0) are home for Friday’s Western North Carolina Athletic Conference game against an undefeated opponent with an identical record — Tuscola (4-0).

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. in Sylva.

“They’re all big this time of the year,” Brookshire said.

“Especially in this situation where I believe we’re playing one of the best football teams in Western North Carolina. Believe me, it shows on film. It is the next game on our schedule, but there is a lot riding on it. We’re excited about the opportunity, especially with it being at home.

Smoky Mountain is one of the best underdog stories in mountain football at the moment. The team from Jackson County hasn’t been 4-0 in 18 years or had a winning season in 17.

Senior Matthew Ridley (771 yards, seven touchdowns) remains the top rusher in WNC.

N.C. State baseball recruit Cole Hooper (701 yards and four touchdowns with four interceptions) is slinging a football at the moment, and slinging it well. His top receivers are Austin Baumgarner (13 receptions for 198 yards and two touchdowns) and Connor Moore (11 receptions for 199 yards and one touchdown).

The defense has been keyed up by Kyle Bradley (7.5 tackles per game) and Michael Ashe (6.8).

Brookshire is a 1988 Tuscola graduate, but Friday’s game is going to be a challenge, whether it’s personal or not. The Mustangs haven’t beaten the Mountaineers since 2012 and are 2-8 in their last 10 meetings.

“When you face an offense like Tuscola runs (the triple-option), you have to play assignment football,” Brookshire said.

“Our kids have been locked in all week at practice, and we need to be. At any given moment, Tuscola can break a 60-yard play if you make a mistake. They have a lot of kids who can run, some really fast kids who run good angles. We’ve got to be on our game to give ourselves a chance to win.”

Goosmann taking TCR record to an untouchable level?

Roberson soccer players celebrate Monday after goalkeeper Evan Goosman, holding up three fingers on both hands, recorded his 33rd career shutout.

Roberson soccer players celebrate Monday after goalkeeper Evan Goosman, holding up three fingers on both hands, recorded his 33rd career shutout.

SKYLAND – Evan Goosmann has a few rare nights where pacing back and forth is about the extent of his action.

But when another soccer team does advance the ball through the midfield and past Roberson’s back line?

Goosmann has proven himself ready time and time again.

The former all-state goalkeeper became the Rams’ all-time leader in shutouts earlier this week. The old school record was 32 and Goosmann has 34 after a clean sheet in Wednesday’s 4-0 win at Erwin.

“It really means a lot to me. It’s one of the proudest moments I’ve ever had,” Goosmann said.

“I’m really happy with the way our team is playing. We didn’t have a lot of seniors (in 2015), so that’s really helped. We’re all trying to do our best and the guys on this team are doing a good job finishing their chances.”

Goosmann is a senior and still exploring his college options.

He saw some light work at the varsity level as a freshman in 2013, then really came into his own after that. Goosmann was named the 2015 Mountain Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year and a Citizen-Times All-WNC keeper along with all-region and 4-A all-state recognition from the N.C. Soccer Coaches Association. He had 16 shutouts last fall.

Goosmann previously shared the school record for career shutouts with three former Roberson keepers – Patrick Brown, Matt Novchich, and Eric Handley – before getting No. 33 in Monday’s 3-0 home win over North Buncombe.

For the season, Goosmann has 55 saves and eight shutouts.

Rams defenders who have contributed to those stats include starters Bradley Elliott, Carson Brock, Garrett Douglas and Tanner McElreath.

“When we win, we win as a team. When we get shutouts, we do it as a team,” Roberson coach Josh Martin said.

“Evan’s record really is something our team has been able to share together. And with the success that we’re having in some other sports like football and volleyball right now, it’s important for us to represent Roberson the best we can.”

Top goal-scorers for the Rams (10-3-1, 3-0-0) this season are Jack Sandstedt and Imanol Yepez-Frias with nine goals apiece, followed by Douglas (seven), Chris Gregorio (five) and Evan Lewis (four). Lewis has given out a team-high nine assists. Other leaders in that category are Yepez-Frias (six), Thomas Hanson (five) and Sanstedt (four).

Next week is rivalry week for Roberson. The Rams play Monday at Asheville High and then turn around and host Reynolds on Wednesday. Both games should begin at 7 p.m.

Martin is in the middle of his first season as coach and has the defending MAC 4-A champions tied for first place in the overall conference standings with the Rockets (10-2-1, 3-0-0).

Accolades keep pouring in for Knights' Marsh

North Henderson senior Caroline Marsh.

North Henderson senior Caroline Marsh.

HENDERSONVILLE – Caroline Marsh first got involved with volleyball in sixth grade when she was the manager of her middle-school team.

The North Henderson senior then started playing with Xcel Volleyball Performance.

“Once I started playing, I found I liked playing volleyball more,” she said.

That’s a good thing for the Knights as Marsh has already accumulated 1,598 career kills, 469 digs and 393 blocks.

She is the latest MaxPreps/American Volleyball Coaches Association state player of the week.

Marsh earned All-Western North Carolina Athletic Conference and Citizen-Times All-WNC honors for the third straight year in 2015. The Knights finished that year 15-7 and reached the second round of the NCHSAA 3-A playoffs after a 0-4 start. In Tuesday’s 3-1 win over Brevard, Marsh finished with 41 kills and 27 digs.

Marsh accepted an offer to continue her volleyball career at UNC Wilmington.

“Caroline has always been a talented volleyball player,” said North Henderson coach Sue Moon, who also coaches her in basketball. “She continues to work at her game. This year, her leadership has come on very, very strong.”

She not only exhibits her volleyball talent in the gym, she also helps those around her.

“The true test of a leader is she makes those around her better. Caroline does it,” Moon said.

One trait of a leader is planning for the future, something Marsh thought about when also playing basketball.

“It’s definitely a lot of hard work,” she said. “It’s what college is going to be, it’s preparing me for that.”

As a freshman, Marsh started receiving mail from colleges. However, it was later when she realized that her work was not in vain.

“When I started visiting schools, it came to me, my hard work did pay off,” she said.

Her time at North Henderson and with Xcel have both helped her ability mature.

“Being at North really developed me as a player,” Marsh said. “From Xcel, I learned so many skills I can bring to North. It kind of equals out with each other.”

Williford, Bearcats throttle Heritage

Hendersonville’s Alex Williford (4) had a hand in six touchdowns in Friday’s 42-22 win at Mountain Heritage.

BURNSVILLE – What a difference a week makes.

Hendersonville was down by as many as 37 points in a 40-17 home loss to Reynolds on Sept. 16.

Friday?

The Bearcats went on the road and dismantled the Western Highlands Conference’s preseason favorite and No. 1 team in the Citizen-Times Best of the West rankings.

Alex Williford completed 11 of his 14 passes for 268 yards and four touchdowns, along with rushing for another pair of scores in a 42-22 win at Mountain Heritage.

Williford, who went over the 1,000-yard mark in passing last week, hooked up twice with fellow junior Tykel Landrum (69 and 75 yards) on Friday. He also found senior Leon Cooks for two shorter touchdowns (6 and 44 yards).

“We didn’t feel we played as well as we could last week,” Hendersonville coach Jim Sosebee said.

“It’s a tribute to our kids. They came in, put it behind them, and really had a great week of practice. We’ll do the same with this game. It was the biggest game of the year and next week (at home against Madison) is now the biggest game, too. You come in Monday, put on your work boots, and try and get better.”

Williford’s quarterback keepers for touchdowns covered 10 and 27 yards. Landrum had seven catches for 186 yards.

Hendersonville improves to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the WHC with the win. The Bearcats were the only team to beat Mountain Heritage (5-1, 0-1) in conference play a year ago when three teams shared the championship – Hendersonville, Mountain Heritage and Mitchell.

Sosebee is a former Bearcats assistant in his first year as head coach.

More big yardage for WNC quarterbacks

Madison senior quarterback Colby Edwards.

Madison senior quarterback Colby Edwards.

Western North Carolina football has its first 2,000-yard passer of the season, and two more quarterbacks exceeded the 1,000 mark in Friday’s games.

Erwin senior Damien Ferguson is now up to 2,049 after a 253-yard performance in Friday’s 49-48 overtime loss at Reynolds. That means that Ferguson (7,639 yards) could break the WNC career record held by 2010 Tuscola graduate Tyler Brosius (7,895) as soon as next week when the Warriors (2-4, 0-1) host Enka (2-4, 1-0).

Roberson sophomore Ty Gossett (1,314 yards) is the youngest area quarterback to hit the 1,000-yard benchmark this fall. Gossett gave the Rams (5-1, 1-0) a whopping 382 yards in Friday’s 49-14 win at McDowell. Roberson is idle next week.

Finally, Madison senior Colby Edwards (1,153) went over 1,000 yards in the Patriots’ 28-21 loss to visiting Polk County. Madison (3-3, 0-1) travels to Hendersonville for its next game.

Bearcats junior Alex Williford and Christ School senior Drew Johnson reached the 1,000-yard mark last Friday. WNC does not yet have a 1,000-yard rusher or receiver.

Mountaineers hammer Mustangs in WNCAC showdown

Tuscola's Brent Turner (8) celebrates a touchdown on Friday night in Sylva.

Tuscola’s Brent Turner (8) celebrates a touchdown on Friday night in Sylva.

SYLVA –Twenty minutes before kickoff, empty seats were scarce at Carr Hooper Stadium.

Anticipating a tough battle between their unbeaten teams, fans of Smoky Mountain and Tuscola instead witnessed an old-fashioned whoopin’.

Tuscola’s Caleb Ferguson sprinted 73 yards for a touchdown on the game’s first snap, and the visiting Mountaineers’ senior and his teammates kept the scoreboard operator busy the rest of the night while earning a 56-7 victory in the WNC Athletic Conference opener.

“I did expect it to be (closer),” Tuscola coach Tommy Pursley said. “I think it’s just amazing what coach (Chris) Brookshire has done with this (Smoky Mountain) program. I don’t think they’re as bad as we made ’em look. They had some things happen to ’em there. But I’m very proud of our guys.”

Pent up for much of the previous week’s game against Swain, Ferguson enjoyed ample running room while rushing for 258 yards on 15 carries and scoring five touchdowns. His other scores came on runs of 64, 3, 65 and 5 yards.

He had 244 yards and four scores by halftime and now has 22 touchdowns through five games for Tuscola (5-0, 1-0).

“We always put everything we have into practice because the team that works the hardest is going to come out on top, I think,” Ferguson said. “Our O-linemen, again, they are just amazing. They work their tails off every day just for our glory.”

Roman Jenkins added a 64-yard touchdown run, and quarterback Grayson Perkins hit Brent Turner perfectly on stride for a 53-yard scoring strike as Tuscola took a 49-0 advantage into halftime. Turner also scored on an 18-yard run.

Tuscola had 454 total yards before the half, averaging 18.9 yards per offensive play.

“They’re really good,” Brookshire said. “You can’t really judge how good they are just by watching film. They’re big, athletic, fast, well-coached. They did everything right tonight.”

A running clock was in effect throughout the second half. It stopped only for timeouts, scores and measurements.

Smoky Mountain (4-1, 0-1) finally got on the board late in the third quarter when Connor Moore caught a 3-yard pass from Cole Hooper. Devon Macke added the extra point.

Despite the lopsided score, the stands were still at capacity when the final horn sounded.

“I’m proud to be a Mountaineer,” said Tuscola linebacker Jeremy Jacobs, whose name was announced frequently after tackles. “We have the best student section I would say in North Carolina. … Our whole community is just one of a kind.”

Tuscola, which has won its first five by an average of more than 37 points a game, hosts Brevard at 7 p.m. Thursday while Smoky Mountain will try to bounce back at 7:30 p.m. on Friday when the Mustangs host West Henderson.

Well-rested Cougars back on winning track

Asheville High football coach David Burdette and the Cougars improved to 2-3 with Friday's win over visiting Winston-Salem Carver.

Asheville High football coach David Burdette and the Cougars improved to 2-3 with Friday’s win over visiting Winston-Salem Carver.

ASHEVILLE – A week off paid off for Asheville High.

The Cougars changed their routine last week when they had Friday night free to watch other area teams or get an early start on the weekend.

They resumed game week preparations on Monday filled with a few things that had been mission, three traits that senior Ahmad Shivers loves when he runs on the 400-meter relay team during track season — teamwork, timing and trust.

Shivers helped the Cougars reverse a trend of second-half surrenders in Asheville’s 34-12 win over Carver on Friday night at Memorial Stadium.

“We had trust tonight and we hadn’t had that,” said Shivers, who rushed 22 times for 71 yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown. “We were pushing ourselves tonight.”

That push had been a lean. The Cougars (2-3) had lost two straight games after leading at halftime, and were tied at the half in the first game of their losing streak.

They were heading in that familiar direction on Friday against the Yellow Jackets (1-5).

“We’d lose our focus a lot,” Shivers said. “We’d think that because we were winning that we were going to win.”

Asheville coach David Burdette put the sense in different words.

“In the last three games we came out of the half flat,” Burdette said. “We’d have bad penalties like holding or interference, and a lot of them.”

The Cougars built a 17-6 lead at the break on Friday following a 25-yard field goal by Davis Brooks, a 1-yard touchdown run by Devon Davidson and his 2-yard pass to Taquandre Bates.

Asheville took the first snap of the second half after Bates covered Carver’s fumble on the second-half kickoff. But they punted. Their next drive ended in a fumble. Another punt followed a three-and-out.

Carver pulled within 17-12 with 2:52 to go in the third. The Cougars found that trust, timing and teamwork on a drive that ended the third quarter and began the fourth. Brooks booted a 40-yard field goal. They had a little more breathing room.

“It was a game,” said senior receiver Makaius Brewer who had four catches for 42 yards. “We knew that they could score at any minute and we’d be losing. That was the feeling.”

For a split second it almost happened. Carver quarterback Germane Crowell Jr. — son of the former Detroit Lions receiver and Carver head coach — fired downfield toward an open receiver.

Bates intercepted it.

Shivers scored from 14 yards out on the very next snap for a 27-12 lead. Tavon Edgerton added a touchdown with 1:38 to play.

Davidson finished with a game-high 188 passing yards.

“We did a few different things during the bye week and tonight told them that this game is about having fun no matter what else is going on in your life,” Burdette said. “We’d been making mistakes because players were tight. They weren’t tonight.”

The bye-week shakeup included a Monday off, four straight days in full pads and a new drill. Burdette buried a ball under a handful of padded dummies and had his players dive on the pile to get the ball.

“Lots of times an open week is a drag because there’s nothing to look forward to,” Burdette said. “It was fun for me to see they took the coaching and applied it.”

St. Onge, Rockets win a wild one

Reynolds quarterback Nathan St. Onge is sandwiched between two Erwin defenders in Friday’s 49-48 overtime win for the Rockets.

REYNOLDS – Reynolds junior Nathan St. Onge had the same glazed-over look in his eyes Friday as every other player and coach inside Dalton Stadium.

The Rockets and Erwin combined for 1,010 yards and 97 points in a football game that lasted nearly three and a half hours.

St. Onge came into the Mountain Athletic Conference opener for both Buncombe County rivals with 297 passing yards for the season. He threw for 351 more in one night.

There were too many momentum swings to count. But St. Onge and Reynolds rode the last few to a 49-48 overtime win on their home field.

The Rockets (4-2, 1-0) trailed 42-21 entering the fourth quarter of their 11th straight MAC win. Reynolds was out of timeouts when St. Onge lofted a 52-yard touchdown to Kaedin Robinson with 23.4 seconds left in regulation.

“That was a crazy game, the craziest,” St. Onge said.

“We got behind, the defense just kept getting stops when we needed them and the offensive line was incredible. We were all living in the moment.”

St. Onge completed 19 of his 28 attempts – capped off by a 10-yard touchdown pass to Sean Jones on the first possession of overtime. The Warriors (2-4, 0-1) responded with an apparent tying touchdown on a 1-yard run by Isaiah Poore, but the extra point was no good.

“We came into tonight saying there were going to be about six to eight plays that someone had to make to win this game,” Rockets coach Shane Laws said.

“And it seemed like we saved all of ours for the end. We didn’t play perfect, we made a lot of mistakes. But I’m so proud of these kids for the way they kept fighting. Erwin’s kids did the same thing. It wouldn’t have surprised me if we played for another hour.”

St. Onge scored on a pair of short quarterback keepers (3 and 7 yards). Jones racked up a team-high 102 receiving yards and accounted for the Rockets’ first touchdown of the fourth quarter on a 15-yard run. Keyal Talbert added 78 receiving yards and a rushing touchdown.

Erwin was ahead 28-21 at halftime and Damien Ferguson went over the 2,000-yard mark for the season with 253 more yards, most of which went to Trey Martin (eight receptions for 119 yards and one touchdowns) and C.J. Thompson (seven receptions for 83 yards).

Yet the real story for the Warriors was Isaiah Poore who punished the Reynolds defense all night with 28 carries for 227 yards and three touchdowns. Quentin Smith added two rushing touchdowns and Ferguson had one.

Erwin coach Mike Sexton was upset afterwards, saying he felt physical contact initiated by a game official led to one of his players being disqualified in the second quarter. However, he was also quick to give credit to the Rockets.

“My hat’s off to them. Shane and his coaches do such a great job and their kids play hard,” Sexton said.

“And for us, I think the effort is something we can be proud of. Our kids never quit either.”

Even in a high-scoring game, both sides made some crucial defensive plays.

Thompson, who was an All-WNC defensive back in 2015, snagged two interceptions. The first pick came on the final play of the first half. Thompson returned it 77 yards for a touchdown, but a flag negated it.

Eddy Gardner also had an interception and Erwin was able to force a fumble on its 2-yard line in the second quarter, and on fourth down and goal nonetheless.

Ingles Athlete of the Week: Austin Ponder

North Buncombe senior Austin Ponder is the Ingles Athlete of the Week.

North Buncombe senior Austin Ponder is the Ingles Athlete of the Week.

Name: Austin Ponder

School/team:  North Buncombe High School/Black Hawks

Age/school year: 17/Senior

Sports: Football

GPA: 4.0

Favorite subject in school and why:  History. It’s important for us to know about our ancestors and to learn from our past.

Favorite athlete/sports team and why: Florida State. Seminoles football is somewhat of a tradition in my family. Several family members are FSU alumni, and I have been a fan since I was a little boy.

What is your favorite thing about playing football? Being able to form a bond with your teammates that’s like a brotherhood. Knowing that you have got their back and they have got mine.

Quote from a coach: “Austin has done an outstanding job for us this year. He has become a leader on both sides of the ball, has jumped in to be the long snapper for an injured player, plays special teams, and plays on the scout team when he is not in on the first team. All the things coaches look for in leaders and players who genuinely care about the team getting better and being successful is what Austin is doing.” – Coach Curtis Cagle
