ARDEN – For the second time in three weeks, Christ School gave another football team its first loss.
And for the second time in three weeks, the Greenies made it look easy.
Drew Johnson completed 19 of his 29 attempts for 288 yards with touchdowns to Keyvaun Cobb and Tyler Redmond in Friday’s 34-7 home win over Statesville Christian.
Johnson also rushed for 83 yards. Jared Letman-Gash led the receiving corps with seven catches for 79 yards.
“It’s a huge, huge win for us,” Christ School coach Mark Moroz said.
“(Statesville Christian) put up 66 points on Asheville School last week. They’re a very good football team and we weren’t at full strength. Two of our offensive linemen were out and Banks Campbell, Ross Oakley and Davis Oliver really stepped in and did a great job. I don’t think we’ve peaked yet, we keep getting better every week.”
Johnson, who is a senior, has 1,576 yards for Christ School (5-1) after Friday’s home game at Fayssoux Field. Cobb and his older brother, Kokayi, each had four catches for a combined 130 yards. Ryan Caves made field goals from 35 and 45 yards.
Tackling leaders were Seth Griswold (14), Carson Jones (eight), Sage Holley (eight), Oakley (seven) and Cobb (five). Cobb recovered a fumble for a touchdown.
The Greenies had seven sacks as a team, had two blocks on special teams and led 17-0 at halftime.
They also knocked off previously-undefeated Northside Christian (56-6 on Sept. 16). Christ Schools travels to Concord’s First Assembly next week.
